Do you think Great Britain was justified in imprisoning Diana and Oswald Mosley?

Great Britain (as well as the United States and other countries) imprisoned their citizens during WWII out of fear they'd assist the enemy. Do you think this was justified in Diana and Oswald Mosley's case? Why or why not?

What did you think of their special treatment?

Absolutely. They committed treason and put their own ambitions ahead of their country. The special treatment was not surprising. Powerful people with valuable connections get special treatment even in places where all are declared to be equal.

I think in the case of Diana and Oswald there was good reason to believe they would potentially be of value to fascist governments as that was their focus. Their imprisonment was, in my opinion, fully justified.

They should have hung them for treason! The Mitford connections gave them special treatment, if Mosley had not been married to Diana things would have been different for him.

Normally, I disagree with imprisonment without due process. However, in a time of war and in line with the exception the British government had passed, it was justified. Additionally, I think it was justified because there was proof that both Diana and Mosley had gone beyond simply practicing “free speech” and were truly consorting with the enemy.

As for their special treatment, I felt allowing them to live together was not merited.

The government was between a rock and a hard place. They had to imprison the pair as an example as well as a threat. But the upper class still (even after the Blitz) had pro-German feelings, and Diana was after all a Mitford. And then Churchill got into the act . . .

Definitely. They were planning a treasonous activity that would be very dangerous to the security of England in a time of war. They had contacts in the higher echelons of the Nazi regime and seemed to have no problem passing along any information they had. They were selfish people, looking out for their own interests, not the interests of their country.

I absolutely believe they should have been imprisoned. They were basically concluding with the enemy!

Yes. During times of war, rational action often flies out the window when we are generally operating from an overall lack of information. Sometimes human liberties are lost in the chaos and, while not ideal, the lack of action could be even more problematic.

Absolutely! Both of them were traitors. I was appalled that they had special treatment. The rich and powerful always seem to get special priviliges unfairly!!

Absolutely, the British had every right to imprison Diana and Mosley because to attempted to commit treason. I also agree with what others have said that because of their privilege in class they received treatment while imprisoned.

Absolutely. They actively supported the Fascist cause and were ready to assist a foreign government in over throwing the government of Great Britain.

Absolutely. They were traitors during a war and the government had to keep them and their desire to overthrow the government contained.

I do think that they were traitors. It is serious business in wartime! Why were they allowed to be together? I think Diana's family status was the main reason. They were well placed in society and received the privileges of that status.

Even without a trial, there was clear evidence of treason. They were traitors to their country and it was a time of war. What might have happened if they were able to get the radio lines set up and German propaganda was able to be spread. I tend to think their special treatment was not deserved since many other families were separated during this time. It’s only because of who they were in society and who they knew that this was allowed to happen. Truly not fair to all the others imprisoned.

Yes, I do. Their position in society or political relations should not influence treatment. They were traitors-period.

Absolutely, however I do not agree with them being able to live together no matter how long that was to be.

yes, I do. They were plotting against England and aiding Germany. They certainly should have been jailed. Diana was not doing it so much as to harm England, but to help Mosley because of her love for him. She certainly knew what she was doing.

RE: Do you think Great Britain was ...

Absolutely, they had committed treason. There was no doubt. It wasn't a question of "if" they might be dangerous to Great Britain, they Diana was plotting a communications system that worked on giving information that would turn the tide of the war. They certainly did not deserve any special treatment because of relatives in high places.

RE: Do you think Great Britain was ...

Absolutely! Mosley and the fascist movement were a real threat. I’m not sure we can fully understand the desperate situation England was in. Was Mosley using Diana? Probably, but she went along willingly. They were traitors collaborating with the Nazis in hope of taking over the country.

Yes, their imprisonment was warranted. They both acted treasonously, and in the case of Diane, in her own self interest. I think allowing them to live together should not have been allowed.

Yes. They committed treason. I believe Diana knew something was going wrong and tried to calm things down before it took over but that didn't work. They had to pay the price of that treason - but I do not also that they should have been able to co-habitate in prison.

RE: Do you think Great Britain was ...

Absolutely! I was a little surprised there was no allowance for an upcoming trial but there was definite evidence that treason had been committed or intended. My only regret was that they let them be jailed together & that they eventually let them out!
