Before reading The Mitford Affair, were you familiar with the Mitford sisters? If so, how has your understanding of these eccentric, beautiful, aristocratic sisters changed, if at all?

RE: Before reading The Mitford Affair, ...

I had never heard of them before reading this book. I am now very interested in learning more about them. It is interesting to find out such independent women in that time period.

RE: Before reading The Mitford Affair, ...

I just started watching season 6 of "Peaky Blinders" where Oswald Mosley and Diana Mitford appear. It will be interesting to compare its characterization with the novel...and available facts.

RE: Before reading The Mitford Affair, ...

I had seen some mention of some books regarding the Mitford women but had never read of them. I did like Nancy - Unity was very hard to like specially with her like of Hitler - Diane was very full of herself - the mother was no better -

RE: Before reading The Mitford Affair, ...

I have been fascinated by the Mitfords for many years, since reading Nancy Mitford's Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate along with Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited and other books by members of the "smart set." I read Mary Lovell's excellent biography of the family: The Sisters: The Saga of the Mitford Family. and am eager to read the more recent biography by Laura Thompson, The Six. This novel explores in great detail the possible motives of Diana and Unity in following Hitler. Diana is presented as very manipulative which I hadn't picked up in past reading. My understanding of Unity was that she was mentally unbalanced and that view wasn't changed by this book. Thanks to other readers on this thread who suggested books about the Mitfords.

RE: Before reading The Mitford Affair, ...

I knew nothing of the Mitford sisters before reading this book. It was somewhat frightening to see different family members swayed by such different political views. Unity was an example of a person's admiration for a charismatic leader keeping them from seeing the leader's underlying evil plans. I didn't find the sisters very likeable, but I was pulled into their drama. I researched more about their lives. I liked the book, but I wanted more information about what happened to them next - an Epilogue and a few photos? Since it was repeated that Diana was beautiful, I looked for their photos online; I thought the six sisters were all attractive.

I was not aware of the Mitford sisters before reading this book. I liked the history, but I did not find the sisters very likeable. I was pullef into their drama though and kept reading. It was unusual that a family had such different political views. Unity was an example of how people can be drawn to a charismatic leader, but ignore the leader's underlying evil plans. I felt more information should be given about what happened next in the sisters lives. I researched online to find out and to see photos of the family. Maybe an Epilogue and photos could be added to the next printing?

RE: Before reading The Mitford Affair, ...

I was familiar with Nancy as I've read a few of her books. In the book, Widowhood, which I reviewed here, the Mitford sisters come into play a little bit. I also read about Unity in another book. I liked the fact that Benedict touches on the whole Mitford family in this book.
