I think "taking off the skin" was symbolic for shedding the pain Misty was feeling over the abuse. I don't believe she actually she actually shed her skin. Perhaps in her mind she did, as a coping mechanism. She feels she has no support for her body or bones with no skin. I'm sure that's symbolic for feeling no support in her predicament. She overcomes her dangers when she finally reveals what has been happening and has the total support of her family.

I understand the symbolism of separating the skin from the bones. I just couldn't relate to or accept the concept.

When she takes off her skin Misty is totally exposed and is vulnerable to her feelings and fears. She is stripped naked and must come to grips with her situation.
I actually had a hard time with a lot of the symbolism in this book

I agree with Marcia that it was symbolic. I found it interesting that she had a hard time getting back into her skin. I think that symbolism is that it's hard to face your demons/fears once you've tried to abandon them. It was necessary though for Misty to heal.

I agree that it was symbolic but think it was too obvious & simple of a metaphor.

Agree with the thoughtful comments above related to the symbolism of getting in and out of her skin. Trying to shedding her demons. A bit too much that it became creepy...The dangers were her ambivalence and the unknown if she could not get back into her skin. I actually thought at one point she was going to stay "out of her skin and bury herself" as bones.

Obviously, whenever this symbolism began in the book, Misty was in a dangerous situation - emotional as well as the physical pain of rape. However, like all of the comments above, it became too much for me. I wondered- okay, is Misty dying and her soul is rising out of her body? But no... There was so much about the basic plot arc that I liked, but the magical realism got in the way for me - both this skin shedding and the growing glass with its worshippers.
