I was not surprised at all and to a lesser degree those conditions still exist. I would have fought back just like Constance even to the point of being naive and taking big risks. I definitely felt the chemistry between the Sheriff and Constance and I felt he a kindred spirit with her from the beginning

I was not really surprised because the law was not so strictly enforced during the early 20th century, particularly if it involved conflict between a wealthy man and any woman. How frustrating it must have been for a woman during that time and no wonder women failed to report crimes committed against them then (and now). I am not at all certain the I would have been as brave as the Kopp sister. They were very fortunate to have a man like Sheriff Heath on their side.

Not surprised at all. I think the relationship between Constance and the Sheriff is based on mutual respect. If this book is to be the first of a series, the relationship will probably take a long time to play out because of the sheriff's family, community image, and Constance's family situation and her past experience with the sewing machine salesman.

I think there was a lot of corruption and that Henry Kaufman thought he could buy his way out of anything. Thankfully Constance found an ally in the sheriff. Together they were able to finally implicate Kaufman behind all the threats and damages to the Kopps. I think I would have done the same thing, found someone in law enforcement who believed the danger and try to stop it. I think there could have been something more between Constance and the Sheriff but they were fond of each other and respected his marriage.

I felt chemistry between Heath and Constance, but interpreted it as the chemistry of a mentor/mentee. I think she was a bit of voyeur in his marriage; it was something she had never seen. I would have done whatever I could to protect my family in that situation, and I likely would have taken even more risks. In a corrupt little town, it's tough to find justice, then and now. But crimes against women go unsolved. even today!

I was not at all surprised by the conditions but truly admired the Kopps for their persistence--lucky ladies that they found a lawman not afraid to confront a pillar of the society. Obviously, others were not as willing to take the side of a bevy of women against one of the silkmen. As to the attraction between Constance and Heath--it was very obvious from the start and I was surprised to learn he was married. I wonder if she was, too?

I was surprised that the Kopps didn't initially have more support from the community especially the men in town since there seemed to be an idea that they were helpless and not able to protect themselves as women. I sensed an attraction between the sheriff and Constance and I expected the attraction to turn into a more intimate relationship.

More than surprised, I was frustrated by the obstacles the sisters faced while trying to seek justice - but then and now, it is a waiting game when dealing with bullies with money. It is interesting to note that when the money ran out, the bully was helpless. I did feel there was a relationship building between Constance and Sheriff Heath. Whether it was romantic or a kinship from joint pursuits, I guess we will have to see in the next book. :)

Not surprised at all given the time period or the fact that it's still difficult to obtain justice. People with power & money find ways to skirt the law until they're stripped of their power & money.
I probably would've been intimidated into dropping the pursuit of my $50 once thugs started shooting at my home but I admire the sisters' bravery.
Yes, I spotted chemistry in the book & couldn't help but hope that the Sheriff was living with his sister or cousin...not a wife. I'm looking forward to seeing how the relationship between Constance & the Sheriff develops in the next book.

Not surprised considering the time and place. Add that to the fact the Sheriff was ahead of his time considering prisoners' rights and the plaintiffs were strong women.
Yes, I see the relationship between the Sheriff and Constance leading us into more stories in this series!

I was not surprised at the corruption. I seems things have not changed a lot over the years. I also was not surprised that Harry thought he could take advantage of Constance. Women did not have much power. I felt and connection between the Sheriff and Constance. Before I found out the Sheriff was married, I thought there would be a romance.

I was not surprised at the difficulties they faced as women were not really taken very seriously in that time period. But like Constance, I tend to be stubborn and I think I would have been a thorn in the Sheriff's side until he took me seriously. I did sense a physical attraction between Constance and the Sheriff; however, I believe the Sheriff to be an honorable man and even if there are further books, which I am hoping, I do not believe he will act on them. Nor will Constance.
