Rosalind places her faith in science. She states "It is a more palpable, understandable faith than the sort of belief Papa has about the afterlife."

What do you think of her opinion? Do you think the two types of faith are mutually exclusive?

I think scientists do. Faith requires belief in something you can’t prove and science is based in facts.

I tend more toward Franklin's view. There are those, I'm sure, who reconcile belief in an afterlife and religious faith with science, but I think it requires a great deal of twisting to make it fit.

As a scientist, Rosalind needed to have provable facts to support her beliefs. But I know a number of people in the field of science who have found a place in their lives for religious faith not backed by science. To each his, or her, own.

Her opinion was typical of scientific reasoning. Scientists want proof for a theory before accepting it as fact. She and her father differed in this respect. She was not religious, while her father was.

Rosalind put her faith only in scientific facts that could be seen, and replicated. Papa’s faith was belief in the unseen, hoped for afterlife. I do not think these two opinions are mutually exclusive. One can accept both science and religion in one’s life.
