I didn't think much of him, but neither did Victoria. As royal marriages always occurred for political gain and were therefore referred to as marriages of convenience this one was certainly a love match and therefore the opposite.

I initially thought he was rather wimpy and spoiled. I think that was Victoria's original opinion also, the us "the marriage of inconvenience." When he came to court Victoria, he seemed to put up a wall, I think to not be hurt if she rejected him. At first I thought he didn't care, but then realized he did. I came to like him and was glad when Victoria was able to turn away from Lord M and choose Albert.

At first, Albert seemed a typical privileged royal. He seemed to be trapped in his life. He was also wrestling with role, if he was to be Victoria's spouse.

I didn't see him as wimpy, but as insecure and reserved, while also feeling a certain amount of expectation and pressure. But he was fundamentally kind, and certainly very serious, engaged with social issues and interested in learning about new technology. It made sense in the novel that he would not at first be able to get past the social facade to become closer to Victoria, and her bringing him to the wood signaled her desire to please him, which set him at ease, for a while at least. They are both portrayed as strong personalities, so her comment fits.We know from history that they were indeed a love match, and an equal partnership, with some strong disagreements at times.

Reading about Victoria online, I see that her initial resistance to Albert in the novel was entirely fiction, as was her resistance to their uncle, Leopold. She had actually been in correspondence with him, liked him all along (all in her diary) and considered her uncle Leopold a trusted advisor, even before becoming queen. She knew they were likely to marry. Obviously having the sparks flying makes for a better story, but at least, the happy ending was definitely real.

Albert spent a lot of time in his head. Victoria did not. Their storyline read much like the storylines of most teens today ... no one wants to (or can) say what's really on their mind as the stakes are so high. So, they spend inordinate amounts of time dancing around the topic and each other. She played a better game than Albert did (I think most girls do), but imagine having to do this on a world stage!

If I was Victoria I would have prayed for another choive to come along besides Albert. I believe she understood the political nature of the marriage.

Since we were viewing Albert through Victoria's eyes, it's hard to get a clear picture of him from the first meeting. She was headstrong and unwilling to meet him half way at their first encounter, but at the second encounter, she liked his looks and was beginning to understand him better and wanted to please him. She changed her behavior to accommodate him and he eventually recognized this and the rest is history. I would like to read a true history of Victoria and their relationship. It seems an intriguing topic.

To me Albert seemed misunderstood. He and Victoria were very different in their likes and dislikes and lives. This may have been the attraction that they both felt and so this became a marriage of inconvenience. They married out of attraction, not just political duty and service to the crown.

I thought that Albert was somewhat uncertain though his entrance was fairly bold and not really believable. I, somehow, do not think a royal prince would enter a room and immediately, go to turn pages of a musical score. That seemed very contrived to me. I think Albert should have been flushed out quite a bit more.

My reaction to Albert is: how would you feel if you were told that this man you didn't know and didn't particularly want to know, who was related to you, was the man you were to marry? Not enthusiastic, I suspect. When he reappeared as a man, he was much more attractive physically, though still a bit brusque, and I can see why Victoria would have used the term "marriage of inconvenience."

AT first, I thought he was dull and stuffy. He seemed to have no sense of humor and seemed very disapproving of Victoria. In spite of this, there was an attraction between Albert and Victoria.

I thought the situation seemed contrived. Albert was reserved, serious, and I felt forward thinking. I thought the author made this whole situation very simplistic and juvenile. I don't believe Victoria just felt "flutters" with Albert and so then fell for him. I'm sure she understood the whole seriousness of choosing the correct husband and the implications the liaison would have for the monarchy.

He was very stiff and not agreeable. Very rude in the fact that she was not educated about the artists he loved. All in all he did not act like he wanted to marry her. I was happy to learn that they had a wonderful marriage and were blessed with many children.

I agree with a lot of the comments above. He didn't seem to know how to win Victoria over, but then he probably didn't know her all that well. And he seemed awkward around women, and I can certainly understand that what with Victoria being the Queen. I thought the book's description of their romance was kind of junior high-ish. In fact, the whole book seems to be written for the middle school or high school level. But I guess that his seriousness and concern for social issues probably made a good impact on her.
