Where do you see revenge as a driving force for some of the characters in "The Paris Diversion"? How does vengeance reveal itself to enact injustice rather than right a wrong? Did you draw any messages from the book about the moral importance of forgiveness?

Yes, Susanna was Hell bent on revenge on Kate and concocted the terrorist threat to further that end.

Certainly Susanna carried her plan of revenge against Kate and Dexter to an extreme, and a very unlikely one. Susanna really didn’t seem to give much thought to the possibility of others getting hurt. Forgiveness for her was never an option.

RE: Where do you see revenge as a driving force The Paris Diversion?

The ending was unsatisfactory to me only because in The Expats and The Paris Diversion, Kate spends A LOT of time criticizing Dexter, basically calling Dexter a liar, and then, ultimately, rescuing his sorry self from serious consequences. Why run all over Paris, send your husband to a safe house, use your secret assets, risk getting shot, and risking her cover only to turn over what the thieves were after all along? But I don't think Kate's choice at the end of the book was necessarily about forgiving Susanna. Kate had a terrible last mission in The Expats, one that caused her to leave the field forever. I think some of what was going on at the end of this story hit too close to home. Maybe Kate decided to finally forgive herself. By forgiving herself, she needed to stop.

Revenge was most definitely the driving force. Kate and Dexter had something that Susanna and Chris wanted. And it was something they thought they were owed. I'm amazed by how complex their plan was and how many innocent people they were willing to hurt to carry it out. There is the injustice. Also, are you really righting a wrong if the action that set all this in motion was illegal in the first place???

This was about greed, revenge, and vengeance. It could be argued that the ending some forgiveness, but I agree with acstrine that it is more about Kate forgiving herself than Susanna. I might have missed something, but I would find it difficult to draw any message about forgiveness from this novel.

I agree with those who said that Susanna and Chris (Julia and Bill in The Expats) wanted and felt they were entitled to revenge on Kate and Dexter. The only inkling of forgiveness was at the end between Kate and Susanna.

Certainly Julia was after revenge through her entire scheme. The author even included a conversation she had about the need to set up Dexter for the crimes even though it made the whole scheme much more challenging. I didn't see a theme of forgiveness. The ending was wrapped up too too quickly with Kate throwing the money at Julia to really explore forgiveness there.
