Plot twists were delivered rather late in a rather subtle style (Cait's real relationship with her husband; Alice's secret comings and goings; the machinations of Emile's mother, the true depths of Jamie's character).

Colin's book is well-written and well-paced. The twists and turns of the plot were subtle rather than the bombastic way in which many authors deliver the storyline. The quick exit of Cait to Africa was a little too difficult to believe, but made for an interesting conclusion.

For the most part, the plot twists flowed well. However, I rather expected that the man at the bar would turn out to actually be Saul, not a look-alike, as his body was never found. I thought such a diversion with the inevitable finding that she was still actually married would put Cait into an intriguing position and I would wonder how the author would have resolved that.

I had the same thought as ritah about the husband, Saul! I expected him to be alive, but wanting something form Cait. Why would he show up? How would she reveal his presence to the others? I thought it took too long to get to the conclusion. I also did not think Emile would be able find her in Africa. How easy would that have been in 1890?
