Are there organizations you know of that still need a lot of work to achieve gender or racial equality?

Colleges are one institution that have opened up to women over the decades. Which others have seen similar improvements over time? Are there organizations you know of that still need a lot of work to achieve gender or racial equality?

Bank of America is the only American company to make the top 10 for gender equality. Almost half of U.S. companies have no sexual harassment policy according to Equileap. Investors are waking up to the fact that investing with a gender equity lens is good.

NCAA, and other major sports associations. Athletic associations supporting the olympics, Soccer association, Women's Basketball Association. Media.

According to my friends and family who are involved: US military, law enforcement, and lawyers need a LOT more wok to achieve equality!

I was listening to an audiobook while I walked my dog yesterday morning. The narrator began a section on childcare workers. I had an "aha" moment of sorts. Women are left out of many "organizations" due to the lack of affordable childcare and the lack of childcare workers. In fact, I feel like childcare workers themselves are left out of the whole "American Dream" organization because they are not paid a living wage to begin with. While this is beginning to shift a bit, female educators have not been a part of the administration in our nation's schools.

I feel like we are just beginning to realize the racial inequalities that still exist in our country, especially as we are able to get a better historical perspective thanks to people like Heather Cox Richardson. I was thrilled to visit a bookstore in Pilsen (Chicago) about a month ago. They had one of the most diverse representations of work I have seen in a long time. In addition, their inventory of books about migration, women, and labor movements were in the front of the store, not tucked away in the back. This struck me as very important, as we need to hear the stories from those who have most often been left out.

I think there is still a lot of work to be done. Women still make less than men for doing the same job. Even using the author's statistics, women made strides in becoming tenured professors, but they are still way fewer in number than their male counterparts.

Unfortunately, there is still a lot of work to be done. As a male, it always pains me when female colleagues occasionally ask me to respond to emails or present certain proposals because they believe it will be better received coming from a man. I also remember my wife coming home from jury duty one day a few years ago irate that the first question a lawyer asked her was what her husband did for a living. The males had been asked their jobs, and she was quickly excused from the pool when she said, "Shouldn't you ask me what I do for a living first?"

I think businesses are trying to be more inclusive, but it's hard to change people's attitudes when this is how it's always been. From my experience academia does seem to be better about being inclusive to women. I would say professional athletics is a place that needs a lot of improvement for women. As far as race I think we need a lot of work everywhere.

I like some of the points that acstrine brought up about women and the impact that childcare has on their career opportunities. I feel this is changing in that men are taking more of a partnership in parenting. I know the supervisor I currently have lets us know from time to time that he will be out of the office as he has a child who is sick at home. That never used to occur in the past. The bookstore acstrine mentioned that is in Chicago sounds fabulous. I agree that we need to hear more from the people who are left out as a way to make their stories visible and realize that it is often the people we encounter every day working at minimum wage jobs performing work we all rely on for our everyday lives.

Structural gender inequality and racial inequity in the U.S. are still prevalent in almost everywhere, with often horrific results (e.g., cases of policy brutality against BIPOC). I didn’t realize until I read The New Jim Crow how incarceration for minor drug offenses using crack cocaine ruins Black men’s lives forever. White drug users, on the other hand, choose powder, which weighs so much less than crack, resulting in much lower fines—-or none at all. The past two years have seen so many women come out against men who sexually harassed them. Some of those men have even come to justice, but think of the years of mental distress those women experienced. At least the problem has been recognized and some movement forward is taking place.
