Is there a picture that particularly resonated with you? What drew you to this photo in particular? What questions, if any, do you still have about it?

Yale Needs Women includes a center section of photographs. Is there a picture that particularly resonated with you? What drew you to this photo in particular? What questions, if any, do you still have about it?

Yes, the picture of the girl in rollers on the cover of Life magazine. So typical of the era -- maybe still today. Looks, grooming, half clothed makes the cover. Not the other more positive female images. Maybe suggesting you can be smart and pretty at the same time!!!

I was drawn to the first photo "Freshman Girl Walks Alone...". She has a walk of confidence; however you can see a bit of terror in her eyes. Also the fact that she is ALONE says everything about that year.

RE: Is there a picture that particularly...

There are two pictures that really speak to me. The first is without a doubt the photo of The New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Band. I see a group of women who KNOW exactly who they are and can celebrate that. I see joy, strength, passion, and determination when I look at the photo.

The second is the lone woman engaging with the National Guard on May Day. I admire the young woman because she does not seem to be intimidated and is taking a risk to speak her mind. I'm grateful for the risk takers who went before me and continue to show me the way.

Finally, thank you, Jessica F, for drawing my attention to Freshman Girl Walks Alone. I paid very little attention to it initially. After reading your comments and thinking about how the women were separated from the very beginning, the photo really speaks volumes to me about what life must have been like for the women in the first class. In fact, as I went back to look at all of the pictures there is only one true group photo- -the band in the car.

The two pictures of the field hockey players. It was shocking what they had to do just to play a sport they loved. I will never forget the comparison of what the football players received - a stay in a hotel the night before the game and fancy meals, when the women couldn't even get uniforms or a practice field.

I think the one of the young woman approaching the National Guard with the boarded-up store fronts in the background. Unfortunately I think this is a picture we could just as easily see in today's news.

RE: Is there a picture that particularly...

I just spent ten minutes trying to pick one, but I can't. I loved the New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Band picture in the Volkswagen for the same reason as astrine mentioned in a previous response, but I also found myself drawn to the woman from Look magazine. In a strange way, I like this picture because it annoys me. I could ask why a reporter would feel the need to use a picture like this, but it is basically a rhetorical question. Still, they both work well for the book, and adding all of the pictures was a great move.
