Throughout American Dirt there are threads of grief and loss that tie the characters together. Luca, Lydia, Javier, Rebeca and Soledad all grieve the loss of their fathers. Beto is now an orphan and having faced the loss of his mother. Lydia, Luca, Rebeca and Soledad all grieve the loss of their home as they knew it, before the violence that forced them to leave. There is also a loss of innocence that Rebeca and Luca seem to share most intimately. Lydia also lost her innocence in her relationship with Javier, when she was forced to confront who and what he really was. The band of immigrants are all grieving in some way. Do you think they realize this and how does it provide a base for their bond as they cross the desert?
