So many of Joe's decisions had huge consequences. He didn't go to NY with Cal, giving up the dream of becoming a famous guitarist. He cut his father out of his life denying himself closure of that relationship. He ran out on October rather than face their relationship. I hope the change that seems to come over Joe at the end of the novel is a permanent change.
