The friendship between Daniela and Cadie is tested throughout their lives. This is sometimes exacerbated by the fact that Cadie will never be the target of racism, and she has the advantage of citizenship. Would their friendship have been the same if these differences did not exist?

As a child, Cadie did not even recognize these differences. She just carried about her friend. As an adult Cadie realizes the advantages she had and the fears Daniela lived with.

I agree, I think these things matter a lot less to children.

I think it's possible that Cadie and Daniela would have stayed closer as they grew up if these differences did not exist in the first place. Regardless of how a friendship is formed, I think the friendships that stay the strongest are those where both people can grow independently at the same rate. I think Daniela was forced to grow up a lot sooner than Cadie because of the discrimination she faced in her community.

As children I don’t think they would have realized their differences. If they met as older people it is likely they would not have been friends bases on the racism in this country

I believe they would still be friends.
