I loved the opening of the book:

"Truth hide in fissures and hollows, in broken places and empty parts. It can be buried, crushed, or burnt, but the truth will always rise."
I felt this was very profound and made me want to read more.

RE: Was there a particular quote or passage that struck you as memorable?

There were two and since they are memorable for very different reasons, I'm going to list both.
Chapter 14/Page 111 in my ARC: "Could fear wipe away a lifetime of smiles?" I think students and adult book clubs could have some excellent discussions with this quote.
... and also...
Chapter 28:Raul explaining to Sal the they couldn't seek asylum "because the US government supported the Salvadoran army because they saw the Salvadoran government as Cold War allies against the communists." This is a good history lesson.

I loved 'a moment in time doesn't define forever'.

Page 240 describes the aftermath of the forest fire.
“Beauty she had not anticipated saturated the light and air. The fire had rendered the woods a negative X-ray of itself, stripped down to its most elemental and raw form, like a cast of dancers frozen in position. The absence of color quieted her mind like a drug as she walked through the stark, silent landscape.”

One moment doesn't define a person's life. It's what you choose to do after that determines who you are.

Just like in Charles Dickens A Tale Of Two Cities has one of the greatest opening lines in literature, I was immediately hooked by the opening statement at the beginning of chapter 1.
“ Truth hides in fissures and hollows, in broken places and empty parts. It can be buried, crushed, or burnt, but the truth will always rise”. I knew I was in for some suspense and intrigue with those lines. By the end of chapter 1 when it was implied about a secret and where they left him- buried in the woods. The author had me
Sold at this point.

On page 61 Cadie said:”His eyes were the shocking blue of the ocean in the movies. The color seemed to churn like water as he stared at her. Cadie held her breath, afraid she smelled like the peanut butter she had spread on an English muffin that morning “.

I absolutely love the imagery of the ocean in someone’s eyes and the sense of smelling like peanut butter on an English muffin.

[Cadie] .....”didn’t know how to pray to whatever Dolores believed in, so instead she called on the highest power she knew-the forest- to keep her and her secrets safe.”

There were several, as mentioned above. My favorite was the one listed by Kdowney25. I can think of several occasions where I could have used it.

I also liked the same quote as kdowney25. Just because you do one bad thing, that shouldn't take away from the good you do going forward.

- "I'd rather accidently cause something bad to happen because I did the right thing, than cause a disaster because I did something selfish."
- The opening line as well (like others quoted)
- "It was that golden hour when the sky bends forward and breathes the honey glow of evening across the treetops on the other side of the lake."
- "Are your eyes green? I'd like to see them."
