What special qualities did you see in Delphi. What do you think her life might have been like if she had lived longer?

What special qualities did you see in Delphi, whom we see through the recollections of others. What do you think her life might have been like if she had survived into the twenty-first century?

She was a tantalizing character that was never allowed to develop because of her
death. I thought if she had lived it would have been a tough road, considering the mores of the South at that time.

Delphi seemed to be a spark of light that dazzled everyone. Her death seemed to symbolize Marshall's loss of innocence as an adolescent and certainly marked one of the seminal acts in his life.

Unfortunately I don’t think we got quite enough information to get a full picture of Delphi and who she was. Honestly I would’ve liked more backstory throughout the whole book, especially since that was a central theme of the story.

I think the author purposefully leaves Delphi’s character to the reader’s imagination as he reveals so little about her. In my opinion, she must have been a lively, free-spirited, and broad-minded girl who bravely defied the cultural norms of the day by falling in love with a white boy.

I really did not get much of a real sense of Delphi, more like an impression of how others felt about her. I felt that this made it hard for me to connect to her, but I did connect to the pain her death left for her family, loves and friends.

The actions of others characterize Delphi. Delphi was a beautiful girl, and Trip was in love with her though she was Black. Bubba thinks so highly of her that he risks the river runs to take her to Trip. Trip risks dealing with the town's negative feelings toward him and Delphi if their meetings are realized.
If she had lived, the town is still prejudiced and would have made her life miserable and probably ruined Trip's life as well.
