RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

It should open around May 4th. Some BookBrowse members are being sent copies of the book which should have been mailed about two weeks ago, so I'm hoping that in about a week's time most people will have received the book. This may not give those people enough time to have read the book in full but I know that many BookBrowse members have already read it, so there's no reason to hold the conversation up too long. For anyone new to BookBrowse reading this - the book club discussions are open to members only for the first few weeks, and then open to all visitors.

Davina - BookBrowse editor.

Where is the "new topic" button. I can't find it and want to start a new thread for "Major Pettigrew".

RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

Hi Becky. I've just sent you an email about this, but for anyone reading this who's looking for the "New Topic" button, you should find the button at the top of every discussion page.

Let me backtrack here to explain how BookTalk is structured...

There are essentially 3 levels within BookTalk - discussions, topics and messages.

- a message is what I am posting now.

- and the topic I'm posting to is "Q&A about the BookBrowse book club"

- this topic is one of a number of related topics grouped under the discussion, "About the Book Club".

You cannot open a topic within a topic. All new topics have to be opened up as part of discussion. Thus, to open a new topic you have to be at the discussion level. You can find your way to the Major Pettigrew discussion using the navigation at the top of this page or just click this link http://bookbrowse.com/booktalk/threads.cfm?forumid=E98312E4-FFAC-581F-C879C3691987D48D

How long do you plan on each book discussion lasting? When will you announce the next book in the book club? I am really enjoying the format of the book club with the first two books. Thanks

RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

Hi Susan,

At the moment we're aiming for one discussion a month but overtime perhaps that will rise to maybe two or three - it really depends on how things go.

Whatever the number of discussions, in each case I envisage that, in the early weeks, only BookBrowse members will be able to post to each new discussion (but all visitors will be able to view it). We'll also liaise with the publisher to provide a number of copies of each book to members (who will be selected just as they are with First Impressions at the moment), so that there will be a core of people who have read the book and are ready to discuss it. This will hopefully allow us to explore a variety of books, not just those that are already widely read. Then, once the discussion has been established and has been running for a few weeks, it will be opened up so that all visitors can contribute.

I suppose at some point we might want to close the discussion on a given book if it seems to have run its course and is starting to go in circles, but that is so far off I wouldn't be able to say if or when that might be. But even if a conversation was closed for new posts, it would always remain visible.

If this has been asked or answered before I apologize, I couldn't find it. How are the books for the on-line discussions chosen?

RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

Hi Diane,

The book club is very new, in fact we're still just testing the waters, but how I anticipate books will be selected is much in the same way as with First Impressions ... publishers contact us with suggested titles and if the book looks like it's a good fit for our members (and, by extension, all our visitors, as although only members can receive free copies, all visitors can view the discussions and, after an initial period, take part) we'll schedule a book club discussion - with the publisher mailing an agreed number of books to members who've expressed an interest in the title.

Hi Davina,

Just curious if the next book has been chosen and I somehow missed it. I'm really enjoying on-line book clubs. What a fun idea.

RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

Hi Martha
You haven't missed anything :) We're just getting going slowing making sure to get the bugs sorted out. BUT I am happy to announce that the next title will be The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. We have 30 copies to share with our members (which will be offered at http://www.bookbrowse.com/onlinebookclub in a week or so), and the discussion will open a few weeks later. In the initial period everyone will be able to view the discussion but only members will be able to take part in it (all members, not just those who receive a copy). Then, a few weeks later, the discussion will be opened to all visitors to post.

Ewww-Davina,

You are just awesome. What a great choice. I've been dying to read this. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a copy since I've been on the world's longest waiting list at my library. But, I'll find a way before so we can discuss it in book club.

RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

I just finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks about a week ago and I'm eager to discuss it. What an inspired choice! I'm sure it'll provide lots of good discussion topics.

RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

Hi Davina:

The Book Club is a wonderful idea. Will the discussions be archived so we can refer back to them in the future? In the coming months my book club here will be discussing a couple of the books you have suggested. I would love to refer to the BookBrowse's discussions at that time.

RE: Q and A about the BookBrowse book club

Yes, the discussions will definitely be archived for the long term. We might reach a point where we close posting to a particular discussion, if it seems to have run its course, but the conversation will always be visible.

RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

Hello. I've just joined the book club recently, discussing 2030, and I really enjoyed the format. I've never joined a conventional book club (don't know why, guess it's because I don't want to HAVE to read a book I don't like), and I particularly like this club because I can discuss books of my own choosing. My question is - when will there be new books to discuss and what will they be?
Thanks,
SusanK

RE: Q&A about the BookBrowse book club

Hi Susan,

I hope to have at least one book discussion a month. Upcoming discussions include Turn of Mind (May 24), The Mercy Train (29 May) and Heading Out to Wonderful (5 June). You'll also find about half a dozen books currently open for discussion at http://www.bookbrowse.com/booktalk and you'll find the discussion(s) that are actively being promoted at http://www.bookbrowse.com/bookclubs/

Does that help?
