What does Genie mean by "having [you] would be easy"? Why was this remark "everything [Anastasia] ever feared"?

As Anastasia and Billy leave Genie's home after tying her up and robbing her, Genie tells Anastasia that she immediately knew that "having [her] would be easy" (page 256). What does she mean by this? And why was Genie's remark "everything [Anastasia] ever feared" (256)?

I thought she could see through Anastasia/Stacy. Genie was a person who had to keep her true self a secret and she could see when someone else was doing the same thing. I thought that Anastasia’s fear was that she would never achieve what she wanted and that her true self would be found out and that is what happened. She thought she was using this older woman when really she was being used.

RE: What does Genie mean by

I took Anastasia's reaction to Genie's comment to mean that Anastasia isn't as strong and in control as she thought she was. Anastasia thought she was the one manipulating Genie by staying at her house, lying about her parents in the crash, etc., but Anastasia didn't fool Genie.

I agree with AmberH. Anastasia has thought she was controlling Genie only to learn that Genie had seen through her scam from the beginning. What is more thrilling to a scammer than to scam one who thinks he/she is in control. Too, Anastasia always has to worry about the lies she tells. Will she remember them all the same way with the same person? Will someone come along who unveils her as a fraud? Living as a grifter would be stressful.

I agree that Genie was on to Anastasia the whole time and was, in fact, manipulating her. I think this was meant to be a real put down to Anastasia not only because she was angry about the robbery but also to let her know that she was not as clever as she deemed herself to be.

Anastasia was insecure and wanting to better herself by any means, even by being seduced by Genie. Genie saw though her from the beginning, and did "use" Anastsia. It was a bit of two-way street. I was surprised when Anastasia helped rob Genie though. I guess she thought she was taking what she deserved for her services.

RE: What does Genie mean by

I thought of the saying "it takes one to know one". Genie saw through Anastasia's story from the very beginning. In fact, she may have even decided to take on Anastasia after the manager told her she was now an orphan from the plane crash. Considering Genie knew everyone on board, she would have known Anastasia was lying from the get go.

Once you tell a lie, it is hard to remove yourself from the new reality you created. In Anastasia's case, the parties kept getting bigger, the clothes better, and the cash allowance grander. Anastasia thought of herself as an actress awaiting discovery and rationalized her very first lie with the thought that SHE was going to comfort Genie during her time of loss. The fact that Genie knew from the beginning proved that Anastasia was not as good as she thought she was. She was embarrassed for being "caught". She had a narcissist personality. Everything was supposed to be about her. But Genie one upped her!

I think she could see how gullible Anastasia was and how she was looking for something.. love or fame or riches, to make her feel important. Genie could see that she would be easy to win over because she was not a strong individual and was easily swayed.

Anastasia has always let people take advantage of her, but this time she thought she had the upper hand and was taking advantage of Genie. But not so - Genie knew she was lying from the start and was in fact taking advantage of her. In the end she made sure that Anastasia knew this.

I agree with you, Maggie, about Genie making sure Anastasia knew. I think this was one way for Genie to hurt Anastasia and save face during the robbery. Most likely, Genie would recover everything she lost by filing an insurance claim, but Anastasia would carry the insult with her for the rest of her life.
