Do you agree with Aaron's father's description of the two kinds of people in the world? How does this sentiment affect Aaron's life?

Aaron's father tells him, "There are two kinds of people in the world… those people who don't care if they do it wrong and those who work hard to do it right. Now which kind should a man be?"

Do you agree? How does this sentiment affect Aaron's life?

RE: Do you agree with Aaron's ...

I agree that there are certainly people who are driven to do a job not only right, but better than one could hope for (my husband is such a person). But I think saying there are only two options is an oversimplification. There are people who don't care if they do it wrong, and others who do care but have limited control over how a task turns out. Sometimes it's better to care, but not care so much that it cripples you when you fail.

It definitely impacts Aaron's life. He's so committed to his work that it seems like he's almost always there, even when it would be better to remain home with Rachel.

I think Aaron’s father's view is limited because yes there are people who do not have the ambition to get the job done right, just do enough to get by, and those who strive for perfection. But there are more people who learn to balance the two as needed plus make time for family and other obligations. Aaron falls easily into the approach of getting it done right thus not always having the time to understand and support Rachel’s emotional needs.

Aaron’s father’s description of the two kinds of people is based on his opinion that not choosing to do a job right means, by extension, that one doesn’t care about doing it right, which is clearly not a logical conclusion. It is however typical of how some parents hope to sway their children into doing the right thing. While this approach may have worked for some parents in the 50s, it probably doesn’t today. Aaron knows what is expected of him and obviously doesn’t want to disappoint his father.

I thought it was a very limited view. There are definitely more than 2 types of people and methods when it comes to completing tasks.
