Compare Maya's "fiction" about the last day of her mother's life to Ismay's version. Which do you consider to be more accurate and why?

Sadly, I think that Ismay's version is probably closer to the truth. Maya never knew the whole story, and I think her version is a little less harsh than what actually happened.

I wonder if a better phrasing for this question would have been which is more "true" - Maya's account or Ismay's? To my mind, Maya's account was akin to myth - but there can be a lot of truth in myth even if it isn't strictly historically accurate.

I think Maya's mother's last day was more likely what Ismay had said but for Maya I think it was important for her to believe what she did. She was too young to understand what was happening and there is no reason for her to ever know how desperate her mother's situation was and why she did what she did. In most families there are fictions about the past that the current generation tends to create rather than admit to some less than perfect ancestors or to keep their children from feeling any burden for things that happened in the family in the past.

Most accurate for who? They are both accurate for those persons. Maya's may grow in depth over time, and Ismay may soften hers over time... but our experience is all we have, and it is from that position that our emotions and stories emanate from.

I'm afraid Ismay's version is probably more like what really happened. But then Ismay is somewhat hardened to the cruel events life may bring your way. Maya has many years before she has to deal with such harsh realities.

They were both accurate from each of their perspectives. I would like to think that Maya's was most accurate overall.

I agree with those who say both were accurate. Each of us view things from our life experiences. Maya 's was accurate considering how young she was when it happened. Ismay's was accurate when taking into consideration her experiences with Daniel. No two people look at the same situation in the same way and it should be no surprise that these two also have different versions of what happened.

I also agree with those who say both were accurate. What was interesting was how Maya and Ismay had kept their locked up inside themselves and what the circumstances were that propelled each of them to tell their stories to others.

Ismay's but who knows?

There is no way to really know what led Maya's mom to that point and what was going through her mind. Possibly it's a combination of both versions, plus the part we don't know

Iloved this book. It will be placed on a special shelf on my bookcase where all of my favorite books I want to keep.are stored. There was something satisfying to me after I closed the book as I felt the story came full circle.
