What characteristics do you feel a leader should demonstrate during a time of war? Do you think Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin displayed those characteristics?

Which traits did each possess that hindered their ability to be an effective leader, in your opinion?

This question immediately made me think of Colin Powell’s thirteen rules for leadership, most especially to have a vision, don’t let adverse facts affect your decision and avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it. Separate from his rules, I also remember saying that when you make the decision to enter war, you must also be clear on what your exit strategy is. I do think ego played a part in how each dealt with their decisions, which also hindered/delayed decision making.

Integrity. That's what made Colin Powell a good leader. Trustworthiness. Knowing who you are and what you believe in. Character.
And I'm sorry, but right now, I don't think we have one political leader who has these qualities.

As far as the leaders during WWII, I think they lacked the ability to compromise , always putting thier own counrty first. That made them a great leader in thier own counrty, but not the best war leaders. Because of that, so many more people , citizens and soldiers, died than needed to.

Good leaders possess integrity, honesty, selflessness, and the ability to inspire others to do good. We have had many great leaders in this country since its founding, but unfortunately the last several decades seem to have produced many individuals totally unsuited for leadership positions. Rather than inspiring people to do good, they have demonstrated hate for those who are less fortunate, of a different skin color or religion or political party. Sadly, these individuals have a vast following because, I believe, a very large group of our citizens love to hate anyone different than them. I don't know what it will take to turn this around since so many of our citizens blindly accept this creed, just as most of the people in Nazi Germany did.

A good leader must trust his/her fellow countrymen enough to be as transparent as possible. Through his fireside chats, Roosevelt stayed in touch with the people, as did Churchill in England. A good leader must also be very cognizant of history and practical in making decisions that are in the best interest of the country. Taking a cue from George Washington, a good leader must serve the people. Our politicians now care more about staying in power and getting rich than representing the people who elected them.

Two other qualities I’d add to BuffaloGirl’s list is humility and a willingness to listen to those who share different opinions. Lincoln intentionally selected people as part of his inner circle who had opinions that were different from his. He did not assume his opinion or plan was the best. I’m not sure there was much humility between the three leaders. Roosevelt may have had a little humility when trying to privately work with Stalin.
