Churchill used the words "storm and ruin" to describe the state of the world at the start of 1943. What word or two would you choose for this time period? What about today?

Using one or two words, how would you describe the state of today's world?

"Ignorant" best describes those in the USA. Perhaps that describes much of the world today too. Look at the big picture people!

Today--incendiary--at least domestically. I worry more about revolution than I do about widespread world war.

I would use unrest and suspicion. The same two words apply today.

Determination and evil for 1943.
For 2023, discordance and ignorance, at least in the U.S.

This is a tough question. All of the words above all ring true then and now. But, I would have to go with “superiority” (racial) and narcissistic (leaders). Both apply to then and now.

I
"Frightening", "corrupt" and "deceitful" are three that come to mind.

Evil and orchestrated chaos come to mind for 1943. For today, I believe we see orchestrated chaos with a long term plan of division and isolation of individuals with the goal of diminishing intellectual thought of all but the elite - which pretty much defines evil.

I totally agree with barb23703! The world was crazy then and its crazy now! in 2023, exclusive in the manner of excluding others not like you. Uneducated. People do not know or want to acknowledge and understand their own history. And nasty! I've never seen a time where so many people are just plain nasty!

I so agree with my fellow readers. This world was crazy during WWII, and it continues even more so in today's world. Our country is in a state of uglyness (if that is a word), pure and simple uglyness. We have forgotten how to work together for the good of all. What happened to being kind to each other? What happened to helping that person who needs a hand up? Our citizens refuse to acknowledge what is dividing us. Our society is fueled by discord and ignorance. Nightly I am amazed at the amount of ignorance as it appears on my television set. When are we going to wake up and take back our freedom? Our only hope is in the younger generation who seems to be more aware of each other.

Storm and ruin absolutely described the world, especially Europe, Russia, and the South Pacific in the 1940s.

The words I would use to describe our country today are Hate and Distrust. Rather than attempting to reach compromises and learn about each other, factions seek to utterly destroy each other. I honestly don't understand all of the hate.

I would use the words division and tribal righteousness. It is unnerving that Congress doesn't want to find solutions but wishes to "dig in" to obstruct Biden's agenda. Nothing is being done to HELP people who have great needs. SO SAD!
