What did you think of Roosevelt's decision to have Yamamoto assassinated? Do you feel assassination is a reasonable action to take during wartime? Is it valid any other time?

I agree because it showed Japan that their leaders weren't invincible. Sometimes you have to cut the head off a snake.

It was probably a wise move considering his delivery of destruction on American soldiers but I was surprised and did not know this was his doing until reading this book.

Roosevelt made the correct decision. Admiral Yaramoto was a Japanese naval war planner. Assassinating him damaged the Japanese war capability.

I agree with lynneb - probably a wise move, but I was a little surprised that it was Roosevelt's direct decision.

I was surprised when I read about it, but as I read the comments above I realized Roosevelt really had no choice, and that assassination was and is a valid wartime strategy.

To the generation of my parents, FDR was a savior you could never tell them otherwise. He was forced into this decision by his war council, it was not his idea at all.

Well I think it worked better than killing Gadaffi. "We came, we saw, he died" didn't work nearly as well for us.

As others as stated, I think it was a wise decision, but for some reason it did catch me off guard that he ordered it.

It was a gutsy move - but I understand why he made that decision. Like the others, I was surprised he ordered it.

I think it was a two edged plan . Yamamoto planned the Pearl Harbor attack. Maybe it was a bit of revenge. Also he was the lead naval officer, so perhaps that would at least slow down the Japanese navy in the Pacific.

I think it was important for the morale of the allied troops because he was blamed for orchestrating the attack on Pearl Harbor

It was a fact that I was not aware of. Since I was born during this time, my education did not provide me with detailed history of World War II. Since he was the mastermind behind the attack on Pearl Harbor, it was probably a wise choice.

It caught me off guard. I think that we Americans like to believe that we don't do things like assassination. To be honest, I can't really say what I think of it. I understand it, just as I understood the taking out of Osama Bin Laden, but am certainly glad I am not in a position that I would have to make the decision.
