Roosevelt attended several conferences with world leaders during the war. In what ways do you think these conferences would be the same if held today, and in what ways would they differ?

I would like to think the outcome would be the same, but I think we would see something similar to what we see today with Ukraine. Countries dip their toes in to provide just enough support to keep Ukraine from getting totally controlled by Russia. I fear that if these conferences were held today, the support for Europe would have been nowhere near as robust as it was then.

If meetings like this were held today, I think there would be a lot more done in public. And even if they had a private meeting there would be some sort of press conference after it. I do think they could keep it a secret until the last minute if they were careful. We learn all the time of leaders visiting somewhere and we don't find out about it until it is actually happening or shortly thereafter.

I think today is all talk. We know that Russia is committing atrocities in Ukraine, but nothing is happening except for leaders preening in front of the cameras. What has the UN done except issue statements? Leaders can try to keep thier meetings secret, but that wouldn't last long with the internet. And each counrty wants to look their best in their moments in front of thecameras. Then they can do what they want. Are we doiong much different to help counrties like Urkanine than we did to help the Jews WWII?

I agree with scottishrose that it’s possible leaders could meet without the knowledge of the press or social media. Trump made an unannounced visit to Iraq in 2018 a day or two after Christmas. Biden made an unannounced trip earlier this year to Ukraine to meet with Ukraine’s president. Given all the logistical issues, I am not sure that 3 leaders could pull off a private, unannounced meeting.

Obviously, the level of security for the leaders today would be much more high tech than in 1943, but the attempts to do harm would also be much higher tech, so the level of danger is probably comparable. Would there be a comparable outcome today? Most likely not. Both parties have to come to the table with a desire to accomplish the same goal and with sincerity. We have seen over and over that the totalitarian regimes give lip service to peace, but in actuality what they want is peace with total domination.
