Juke said the twins were "a blessing, no matter how lean the times." Why do you think he feels this way? Is he sincere? Do you think he loves the twins equally?

His family gained some notoriety and attention when it was falsely stated that they were twins of two races. I think he felt manly that he'd fathered Wilson. I don't think anything about Juke is sincere. I'm sure he favored Wilson.

Juke is capable of affection but as an expression of his patriarchal of ownership. He is flattered by evidence of his masculinity, I agree. If he hadn’t thought Wilson was his, that baby would not have been accepted as a blessing.

Juke is sincere in the way he feels about his offspring and familial connections. Also, he thinks Wilson is his child so he can be generous in his outlook.

When he made this statement, I do think he was sincere. He feels that way probably because as one who farms, babies are usually seen as a blessing, since they will be able to help on the land from the time they are young. It seemed natural to me that he would favor Wilson, since he believed the baby to be his.

He has a strong sense of family esp Wilson.

I thought the same thing as juliaa.

I think he was proud of Wilson as his son. He also had feelings for Winnie as his grandchild. He also probably thought of them as future help on the farm. He may have favored Wilson but he was related to both "twins"

I don't think that people thought of 'lean times' when it came to adding to their family. Many families had 4, 5, 6 or more children. Especially on a farm. More children meant more hands to work on the farm. The prevailing attitude was pride in family. Many times family was the first place you went for help, the first place that entertainment was sought, family was central. So that fact that Jake would feel this way is not unusual. I think he was sincere at the time of saying that. I think he saw more worth in Wilson than in Winnie just due to the difference in their gender and the belief that the male was more worthy. However I think he loved having a grand daughter also, but maybe not in the most grandfatherly way.
