What do Mrs Obama's mentors have in common? What did she learn from them about finding a fulfilling career as a parent? Who were/are your mentors?

In "Becoming", Michelle Obama describes a number of women who have served as mentors for her at different times in her life, including Czerny Brasuell, Valerie Jarrett and Susan Sher. What do these women have in common? What lessons did Michelle Obama learn from them about finding a fulfilling career as a parent?

Who are or were your mentors and how do you cultivate those relationships?

As I recall, some of her mentors were successful black women who had careers but also families which she was striving to emulate. I hope I recall correctly because I read this book 2 months ago, before we got our copies.
At thos stage of my life, I am a bit old to have mentors but mostly I recall that they were teachers when I was in high school and college.

Her mentors all encouraged her to be the best she could be. I never had mentors per se, but always knew my parents valued me and loved me, wanting the best for me.

Mrs. Obama's mentors were those who, like her, may have come from humble circumstances, but chose to navigate a world that wasn't ready to accept them anyway. They quietly and effectively found a way to move through to their goals. I believe this takes a very strong will and a steady personality. I also believe it takes a hungry mind ... letting nothing get in the way of learning, of becoming more. They also held a quiet spirit, which seemed to give them the confidence to always do more and be more.

Her mentors took care to let her find her own way as a career woman and mother, and made themselves available when she needed them. They also used their own lives and decisions to show that she could, indeed, be both. They did not tell her it would be easy ... but that she could do it if she chose. If needed, they would advocate for her and encourage her to be more assertive.

My mentors have often been my supervisors. The best ones showed me the way forward rather than spending a lot of time with conversations. They challenged me to be more and also to refine how I moved in the world by being a ready example. I truly am appreciative of what they provided for me.

Who were/are your mentors?

Ms. Obama's mentors were people she admired and seemed not only to emulate, but to use as sounding boards. I never had any true mentors, I had people I admired, but none that were there for me to really talk to and have helpful discussions with - maybe that is why I read so much - I can find the answers/inspiration from people like Michelle! I want my daughters to read this book to learn the value of mentors amongst so many other things they can learn from this remarkable woman!

Her mentors were successful in their professional and personal lives. I think she tried to emulate them and befriend her mentors. My mentors have mostly been people I admired at school and work for my professional life. My mentors for my personal life have been my Bible study teachers at church.
