How might Fenna’s decision to join the war effort been different under different circumstances?

How might the story have progressed if Charles had not had a woman with him when Fenna was going to talk to him in person about her decision to take on the job oversees? Was her decision wise or a panic response?

I'm not sure. I think Fenna wanted to "escape" and help in the war effort. Plus she had been so implusive with her decision to leave Arie, that I think she joined without much thought at all.

RE: Decision made with Charles

Fenna's relationship with Charles was already tenuous--- after he and the stagehands conspired to alter the magic trick to build the audience's suspense---so finding him backstage with the woman was, for her, the final/last straw. She no longer recognized him as her friend and partner.

RE: Decision made with Charles

Fenna’s relationship with Charles was toxic for both of them. Perhaps the presence of a woman helped her focus and move on. The overseas job was just a mode of escape conveniently available at the time.

RE: Decision made with Charles

I don't think it would have made any difference in her decision to leave. There was already a lot of mis-trust between them and she knew that it would only get worse and continue to ruin their act.
