I believe Scott serves as a quasi do over of what he missed and could of had with Dennis. Also it tethered him to his beloved fiddle. With Scott's father incarcerated I felt it stirred Wes to revisit the incident more intently, perhaps even through different eyes. Scott also served as a welcomed bridge between Wes and Dennis.

Scott gave Wesley a chance at a fresh slate -- someone whose struggles Wes possibly thought he could wrap his head around with not much of the associated familial baggage. The fact that Scott was also interested in music helped.

I think that Scott's roll was twofold. First he was someone Dennis and Wesley had in common and more importantly they were both trying to help...Dennis with the ranch and Wesley through the music. It helped the father and son relationship.
Second was definitely the music. I feel that by teaching Scott the fiddle it was giving Wesley comfort and joy just to hear someone play his fiddle even if it wasn't him. I think it softened him some.
