Is Annie responsible for Robbie's accident, and for her family's unraveling? Is it in her power to protect them?

In the beginning of the novel, Annie writes: "Between those bookends was a family whose happiness might still be intact if only I'd been able to see the threats to it more clearly." Is Annie responsible for Robbie's accident, and for her family's unraveling? Is it in her power to protect them?

No, not technically. But lying always has consequences. Having said that she didn't know about Emme so in the end, she may not have been able to protect them

Annie is not responsible for Robbie's accident; however she is responsible for her actions and never realizing that these actions had consequences. Her actions, while she was young, definitely hurt others. She never seemed to care and then repeated the behavior later in life. Her actions were difficult to explain. We don't have the power to protect others, but we do have the power to be reasonable in our actions and to expect that some of our actions will cause harm.

No,at that point things were out of her hands.

Not directly but her actions certainly impacted the family in a negative way. Robbie was responsible for getting in the car with Emme. No she isn't responsible for protecting her family. But she is responsible for her only actions.

No, she isn't directly responsible for the accident, but it did bring to light that she had been irresponsible in her youth. If she had been more straightforward with Jonathan in the beginning, things might have been different.

Actions have consequences, and I do think Annie is responsible for her family's unraveling.

Her youthful indiscretions led to a son that wasn't her husband's, and to Emme who blamed Annie for her parent's problems. It was a ripple effect which then reached out to Jonathan and her children. I think she set it in motion but I'm not sure she's totally to blame.

I wanted to add that I do agree that Annie is responsible for her family unraveling but Robbie made the choice to get in the car with Emme - that is not on Annie

Annie is not responsible for Robbie's accident. Annie is responsible for her own actions.

I don't think Annie is responsible for Robbie's accident any more than anyone else is. Every action by every character led up to it, but I hold Emme more responsible than Annie. It was also Robbie's choice to leave the house.

Annie is not responsible for Robbie's accident. It was a little more of a "butterfly" effect. The affair, the death, and somehow later the unbalanced woman who came into her family's life. She couldn't control that. All she could have done was not had the affair or led Malcolm on. The daughter may still have blamed her. She certainly cannot protect anyone from the unintended consequences. They are not within her control

Of course she's not directly responsible for Robbie's accident and the family's reaction to the whole tragedy, nor is it in her power to influence the protection of her family. All events in life are based upon previous circumstances. When conditions result in something undesirable happening, fault is vague.

She is not directly responsible for Robbie's accident, but I do believe she is for her family's unraveling. While she might be excused for her youthful impulsiveness I do not believe that there is any excuse for her return to Patrick, and subsequent confession to Jonathan. What did she expect him to do with that information? Her self absorption was astounding.

I think she was caused the family to unravel, but Robbie's accident was not her fault.

I do not believe she is responsible for Robbie's accident. She did not know who Emme was at that time . Also, she could not be held responsible for Robbie's actions.

Annie's actions set the ball in motion, but of course she is not directly responsible as she was not the driver and did not yet know that Emme had not just stumbled across her store.

I don't think she was directly responsible for the accident but her "small indiscretion " changed how she related to her family. This in turn caused the family to fall apart.

Not directly but her indiscretion certainly changed her the way she related to her family
