Overall, what do you think of Lessons in French?

At the beginning of the Lessons In French, Kate explains her immature perception of art: “I was too literal. I loved the Monets, but I didn’t actually trust them” (p. 15). In what ways do you think her literal approach to her own art evolves as her year in Paris progresses? Does she finally develop a style? Can you recall a similar evolution in your own life?

I think in the end she was starting to let go a bit a develop her own style. When one copies or renders, the product is right there before you, sort of like adding a row of numbers, there is no argument as to whether or not it has been done correctly. When Kate begins to interpret what she sees the "right"gauge goes out the window. She must learn as an artist, she needs only to please herself and she will develop a style.

The author did not develop Kate's style of art; very little description of what she hope to achieve. I don't think she developed any sort of style by the book's conclusion.

I kept waiting for Kate to do more drawing. I was curious as to how it would reflect her environment as well as her feelings for it. But she didn't make the most of her alleged talent and being in France except for carrying a pencil and sketchbook in her purse. Most artists---especially in Paris---would be sketching like crazy even in restaurants or with others. I didn't feel she took her art seriously despite saying she had a gift for drawing things accurately. When she did draw Portia, she became bored! Disappointing.
