While imprisoned and fearing for his life, Townsend "conjured up the vision of a formation of honking Canada geese flying over a small island of loblolly pines and wild asparagus" to calm himself. Do you have a similar technique when stressed? If so, what is it?

Imagining myself on a beach with the surf in the background always helps calm me down. I also love designing my dream house in my head when I am trying not to think of more distressing things! Yoga breathing helps me calm down in traffic!

I also think of the beach! Nothing more soothing

When I am stressed I pick up the book I am reading and escape into my fictional life. When a book is not available, as when I am in my doctor’s office getting my blood pressure checked, I imagine I am on a beach in Maui, enjoying a beautiful sunny day. I also often will write in my journal and that helps me work through issues.

Reading is one way I calm myself, another is making up stories. Maybe one day I will make up one good to write about.

I also think about relaxing on the beach. I also enjoy reading fiction as a get away too.

Not really. I usually just do some deep breathing and try to remove myself from whatever is causing the stress. Or just eat chocolate ::;-)::

Chocolate and wine are always great, but when that is not practical I agree that nature has a very calming effect. I picture a sunset and try to breathe, it usually works!

Many years ago when I was going through a particularly challenging time, a therapist encouraged me to concentrate on the three most pleasant memories. I chose walking through Yellowstone near the end of the 1988 forest fires. The resilience of nature, new growth in the immediate aftermath, the abundant wildlife and the beauty of the mountains. Second, sitting on an old porch swing on the smoke house of my grandfathers farm, listening to the insects and gazing at the sunset over the corn fields. Third, sitting on the point, a secluded spot on the Delaware shore, with my book and dolphins passing up and down the coast. Also, yoga breathing.

I usually listen to music, breathe deeply, meditate or walk.

I, too, flee to the beach. I visualize myself in some of my favorite places like Siesta Key or Longboat Key. I also have an imaginary place, a little cove that was inspired by a painting that I love. Sometimes I combine the visualization with counting breaths.

I pray, then pray some more then think about sitting on my deck and looking at my flower gardens.
