"You must trust me," Michael Abbott tells Townsend, who opts to hide him. Was Townsend right to trust him? What would you have done in similar circumstances?

I've thought about this one a lot, and I actually don't think I would have trusted Abbott. I'm not even sure I'd have hidden him from authorities, let alone have him talk me into helping him beyond the basics.

I doubt I would have trusted Abbott at all!

I get very annoyed when someone says "You'll just have to trust me", it implies that you don't trust me with whatever issues or problems you are hiding. Helping someone in a life or death situation is honorable, but don't get sucked into whatever got them there in the first place.

There was no good reason on earth for Townsend to trust this guy, just because he saved his life. However, I probably would have kept him hidden anyway, fearing what was going to happen to him if I didn't. Definitely would not pat myself on the back for that -- it wasn't the smartest decision he made.

Not a chance would I have trusted Abbott. I may have tried to help him get to shore after saving his life; however, I would not have gotten involved beyond that. Abbott had far greater knowledge of Havana and could have slipped into the shadows much easier alone.

Townsend was heroic to have saved Abbott but he was naive to maintain any contact or concern regarding him. He was a shadowy character at best, and only asking for trouble. However, he was a thread in the novel which carried the story and wove the plot together.

I probably would have, because I am adventurous and I would have perceived it as a step toward my net adventure!

Nope. i would have saved him, but then I would have been more concerned with my own safety and the safety of my ship and crew. His young age may have contributed to his decision to help, and he sure paid the price! Had Abbott opened up to him things could have gone very differently and Townsend may have been safer

I think it was Townsend's youth that drove his decision-making with Abbott. He jumped into danger right away with him and did not exercise caution in the least.

Yes, I think he was. And he was forced to make a quick decision. In the long run, I believe it's best to trust the best in people rather than looking for the worst.

I agree with Cynthia, I would have hid him because I would have bee afraid of what would happen to him.
