What do you think about Harry’s betrayal of Nora and Daniel, in light of the fact that his betrayal amounts to telling the truth, rather than committing to an agreed-upon lie? To whom or what do you owe the greatest loyalty?

Dr. Harry Trimble finds himself in a difficult situation when Dr. Silas Vickery blackmails him into speaking at the symposium. What do you think about Harry’s betrayal of Nora and Daniel, in light of the fact that his betrayal amounts to telling the truth, rather than committing to an agreed-upon lie? To whom or what do you owe the greatest loyalty: the truth or your friends?

RE: What do you think about Harry’...

I think the greatest loyalty should be to the truth, but I can also see circumstances where a lie can be justified. It was societal constraints, the repercussions Nora and Daniel would face if the truth became known, that prompted the consideration of a lie. Daniel wanted to protect Nora, and himself. It did put Harry in a difficult situation. If a lie is going to involved an innocent third party, then it would be best not to put that person in such a situation and instead just go ahead and tell the truth.

I think that for anyone with a conscience, the truth will win out.

From the onset I didn't think it was a good idea to involve Harry in the plan. It was too risky. I understand the repercussions for Nora had she been outed, but perhaps they should've said it was Daniel performing the work with Nora as an extra set of hands.

I was wondering if Harry would've caved in if the love triangle went differently. What if Nora and Harry did become engaged? Would he have been loyal if so?

I thought it was cowardice on Harry's part. If he were truly such good friends with Daniel and Nora and Croft, why did he not go to them and tell them what was happening? Although we would then have lost the drama of the disclosure, the story would have unfolded in a different way.

RE: What do you think about Harry’...

I think it was very painful for Harry but I understand his deciding that Nora, Croft and Daniel had a better chance of surviving the scandal than the young girl pregnant out of wedlock ever would. It would have been an awful position to be in and it had its repercussions for Harry, too. No practice in London, no future training at St Bart's.

I think it’s better to tell the truth but I can see where Harry was in a difficult situation. He should have told Daniel, Dr. Croft and Nora why he couldn’t cover for them rather than try to hide from them. Overall, it made a worse situation for him.

Telling the truth is usually the best option but sometimes not telling the truth might be the best road to take as was planned would have served all concerned parties but the real obstacle was including Harry because he had the weaker personality and one that was easily persuaded. Nora had courage to survive.

Harry was in a difficult situation, but I do think he was a coward in not sticking to Daniel and Nora's plan.

I think Harry would have talked to Croft, Nora and Daniel and explained the situation, but then we would not have had that story thread. I Liked how the author unraveled the thread and handled it.

Agree that Harry should have talked to Dr. Croft, Nora, and Daniel about his situation. I agree I liked how the author unraveled his story.
