How does Mike and Jamie's relationship change over the course of the novel?

How does Mike and Jamie's relationship change over the course of the novel? What is the state of their marriage at the end of the book?

A tragedy can test even the best marriages. This partnership proved to be composed of two rather selfish people. Not sure it will ever be able to recover.

I think it begins to show the strain. .as any marriage would. But I think they both missed the mark. Mike was distracted through the entire ordeal but it was Jamie who didn't pick up the slack. They both fell apart.

I never felt that they had a true partnership in their marriage. Yes their relationship changed from good to bad and then back to ok but will it survive? I am very doubtful.

I think trust is broken on both sides - Mike's because he feels Jamie doesn't trust or believe him, and Jamie's because Mike seems to be redeveloping a relationship with Chrissie. Although things seem to be repaired (or at least in the process) at the end of the book, I question whether that will be permanent.

I think it was an extremely stressful situation and Jamie didn't really deal with the situation but Mike was athe fault too because he withdrew from her. He didn't talk to her and let her know how he was feeling. I think they needed a lot of help to repair theis marriage.

Before Ritchie's injury, Mike was a very involved parent and partner to Jamie. Then when he withdrew, because he was blaming himself, Jamie thought she was giving him "space" to deal with his emotions. They lost their connection and over time the chasm grew wider and wider. Because they were tip-toeing around each other and not talking about the important things they were each hurting.

Stressful situations often test a marriage. Many people don't appreciate the magnitude of the problem when this happens and just trust that things will eventually get back to normal and are shocked when they don't. Hopefully the police department offers counseling to both officers and their families to help them get through these situations. Otherwise, it is highly improbable the marriage will survive for any length of time.

The marriage had become stale through the years and kids and because of that it really unraveled when tragedy happened. Mike and Jamie both had huge trust issues. Jamie with Christie and Mike with Jamie.

The relationship had all kinds of issues including lack of trust and communication. These are two flawed individuals who don't have the skills to overcome the issues. They both seemed very selfish and uncaring of the other person.

Neither Jamie or Mike had good communication skills and neither could see beyond their own feelings about what had happened. I think they both loved the other but just didn't know how to cope with everything they had going on. I was surprised at how Mike seemed to just walk away from his family when in the beginning of the book he seemed like such an involved husband and dad. But he had so much tragedy to deal with. Who knows whether or not their marriage could survive. I think going through all they went through would test any marriage.

They grew more distant from one another since Mike didn't feel like she knew him since she thought that he might not have seen a gun but still fired on the boy anyways and killed him.
