Natan and Sara lie to their parents about the number of visas they have in order to convince them to flee to Switzerland without them. Once the two of them are left alone in Germany, do you think Natan is always honest with Sara? Do you think he believes they will both really make it to Switzerland to join their parents, or is he putting on a brave face for Sara’s benefit?

I do not think Natan is honest with Sara. He loves her and wants her to have the hope that they will both join the rest of the family. I am sure he doubts that he will be joining them.

I agree with the first post. I don't think he was, I think he kept a brave face to provide Sara with some hope.
I don't think he ever believed they would be joining them.

Natan was the most realistic and fatalistic character in the book. He did not want to worry Sara and I believe he kept her in the dark so she had plausible deniability about his activities if she was compromised.

I think he was putting on a brave face for Sara. I don't think he was tryng to deceive her - he was trying to protect her.

Natan was as honest with his sister Sara as he felt he could be. He sincerely hoped that both would be reunited with their family, but was realistic in the possibility that all would not end as well as he hoped it would.

I agree with all of the previous comments. Natan did what many of us probably would have done. He appeared optimistic to encourage Sara but, it is my opinion that deep down he realized that they would never make it to Switzerland.

I think he was trying to protect her. He knew he wasn't going to make it and he did everything he could to keep his sister safe.

I agree with carolynd. Nathan was a realist. He wanted to keep Sara safe but I don't think he ever thought he would make it through the war.

I also agree with previous reviewers. Nathan was trying to give Sarah hope.

Like those above I believe his reasons were to give hope, but might he not have been hoping that the end would be different.

I think Natan knew the risks of their actions far more that Sara. He tried to protect her while also trying to bring some joy to their lives with walks and food when he could get it. From the beginning Natan seemed to know more about what was going on than the other characters.

Natan was the character I worried the most about. He tried to keep Sara safe physically and mentally.

I didn't think he was being honest with her. He was trying to save her from the pain of the truth. He was out and about and in a position to know much more about what was going on. He knew their situation was precarious at best. He loved her and was trying to protect her. Their story really resonated with me.
