Do you think that Martha changes over the course of the book? What kind of a person do you think she is?

As the daughter of an American diplomat in Germany, Martha is in a relatively safe and privileged position compared to the other women in the book. She also initially admires the Nazi regime before its actions begin to make her feel differently. Do you think that Martha changes over the course of the book? What kind of a person do you think she is?

I do think Martha changes over the course of the book. I was pleased that she eventually understood how dangerous the Nazis were. She seemed to remain a bit flighty but she was a fun, kind person and didn't want her friends to be suffering the way they were.

This book is kinder to Martha than In the Belly of the Beast was. She did change for the better in time. At the outset she was very superficial and spoiled. I think she was mostly full of herself and enjoyed being outre. Real life eventually catches up with almost all of us.

I do feel Martha changes. She was such a party girl and so naive and is becoming more kind hearted and seeing the Nazis are not like she thought.

In the beginning I thought she was frivolous and spoiled. However, she did use her influence thru the American embassy to get visas for Jews to get out of Germany. She certainly favored communism but in the end changed her views.

Agreed. She was slow to discover the truth about the Nazis. Her first realization that something was terribly wrong was when Martha, Bill and Quentin witnessed the storm troopers dragging the local girl Anna Rath, through the streets after abusing her severely. Yes she was horrified but she was also more concerned with how the story, once made public by Quentin, would drag her father into an ugly controversy just as he was trying to establish his credibility with the German government. Thank goodness she finally did see beyond herself and help out as best she knew how.

She was very much a party girl but she did change and did help her friends. Once back in the States she did settle down.

I think Martha changes her feelings about the Nazis and comes to understand the evil threat their policies and actions represented for Germany and the world, but I do not think she changed as a person. She was always happy to do favors for friends to the degree her position allowed her to do so, but unlike Greta and Mildred, she did not seem to have a deep commitment to the cause. In the afterward we learn that later in life she lived in exile due to her association with the Communist Party...that almost seems out of character given the personality the author describes in this book where her flirtation with communism was more a related to her infatuation with Boris.

Martha does change somewhat over the course of the book when she finally becomes aware of the Nazi Party's intent to seize more and more power and the means they were using to achieve their goal. However, in my opinion she never possessed the courage and determination that the other characters possessed.

I think Martha lived a privileged life of wealth and security that allowed her a glamorous and fun lifestyle, but as she spent more time in Germany she could not ignore the power grabbing, cruelty and intentional discrimination of the Aryan nation. When she realized why her father was able to rent a large home for so little money was to provide a screen of protection for the Jewish Panofskys, her blinders were lifted and she began to see more clearly the Nazi intentions to not only subdue, but eliminate the Jewish population.

Martha’s awareness and focus did begin to turn away from her own life and concerns as she became aware of the politics and cruelties. But in the end, once back in the States, her social and love life became her chief concerns again. I think she cared for her friends as much as she was able given the upbringing and life she had.

I had a difficult time accepting Martha as a serious member of the resistance movement. She was in a good position to be helpful but she seemed careless, selfish and flighty. It took forever for her to realize the danger of the Nazis and slowly she did change somewhat. Back in the States she was helpful but, I agree with the comments of Love2read that her basic personality did not change much.

Martha did change during the book from a flighty girl to a supportive figure but search her on line to learn more of her adult life.

Martha was gifted, clever, and educated but needed constant control over her behavior. After returning to America she wrote a few books, married a wealthy man and got caught up in Soviet Union espionage. the FBI and the KGB. She and her husband fled to Prague where she spent the rest of her life.

RE: Do you think that Martha changes over the course of the book? What kind of a person do you think she is?

I saw Martha as someone on the outskirts of the resistance movement. I didn't see her as really being a part of it all. She was helpful to her friends and finally began to see the light but she couldn't hold a candle to the rest of the women in this book. I didn't see her as being a woman of much substance. She wasn't really one of them - I don't think she would have held up well if this had been happening to her. She was more of a Dieter.
