Mildred goes home to the US at one point, but chooses to return to Germany, to Arvid and the work of resistance. Do you think that was a foolish decision? A brave one? What would you have done?

Mildred loved her husband Arvid and did not want him to return to Germany without her and believed she could make a difference in the resistance. It was a foolish but very brave and dedicated decision. I think if my husband had really wanted me to stay in America as Arvid suggested her to do, I believe I would have stayed. I guess I am not as brave or determined as Mildred.

I think it was both a foolish and brave decision. I would not have been as brave and had my husband pushed hard for me to stay, I would have, however difficult that might have been.

Mildred loved Arvid and Germany and there was no way that she would have accepted being apart from her husband. It is difficult to judge her decision as she did so much to help the resistance and she had a huge influence on others. I believe that she felt she had no choice. I honestly don't know what I would have done in her place but I can't imagine having the courage that she displayed.

She had come to love Germany and call it her "home." She wanted to help overthrow Hitler and restore Germany and save the Jewish people and others being persecuted. She also had no children and Arvid was the love of her life. She did not want to be apart from him. I do think if they'd had a child, she would have stayed in America to protect that child. Personally, I probably would have stayed in America with family.

I think it was brave of her and she felt like Germany was her home. I think I would have gone back to the US. It would have been hard to stay in Germany.

While it took bravery, I think it was above all an emotional decision. Mildred returned to Germany because she considered it her home and she wanted to be helpful to people there. I'm sure she would have preferred that Germany was different at the time and that her decision didn't have to carry so much weight.

Yes, I think it was a wise decision on her part, for she loved Arvid and she loved Germany. Because of her love for her husband and for Germany she was willing to work for the resistance beside her husband rather than away from him in the United States. If I felt as though I could make a difference by working for the resistance, regardless of the dangers, I too would have returned to Germany. Not only was her decision a wise one but also a brave one. I admired her.

Mildred’s decision to return to Germany was both brave and foolish. She loved Arvid and hoped she could help him and protect him. I don’t know what I would have done. I do not think I could intentionally stay away from my husband even under this dire circumstance. Mildred’s presence in Germany as an American may have made Arvid’s work harder, but seeing the bigger picture is not easy, especially when the reality of Nazi Germany was so unreal, almost surreal.

I found one of the strengths of this novel is that as she introduces her characters she creates within them an innocence about the lives they will be facing in Germany. We as readers know the consequences that they will face, but they don't. From the beginning Mildred was sincerely in love with her husband and needed to be with him. Her devotion and passion to her husband led her to return to Germany.

When Mildred decided to return to Germany, I thought it to be very foolish. Of course, I had the benefit of hindsight and knowledge of what would happen with the war. But I think she returned more because she did not want to be separated from her husband rather than for the resistance work. Mildred truly loved Germany and I think she had great hopes that all would be resolved without war. But I think her primary reason for not staying in America, in addition to her wanting to stay with Arvid, is that she had a difficult time believing that Hitler would be able to stay in power.

I also thought Mildred's decision to return to Germany was foolish, but like kdowney25 said, we as readers have the benefit of hindsight in terms of what ended up happening in history, which of course makes it nearly impossible (in my opinion at least) to agree in any capacity that her decision was "worth it." I'm pretty sure if I were in her shoes, I would've gone back to the United States. With that said, I do admire Mildred's courage and devotion (both to her husband as well as to her adopted homeland), even if I would not have done what she did.

Mildred loved her husband very much and she wanted to continue her work in the resistance. That said, I think she was foolish to have returned to Germany. I wonder if deep down, she realized she probably wouldn't come out of this alive. I admire her courage.

Mildred and Arvid had been separated from each other for such a long time before the war begin and she did not feel their could do it again. She loved her husband and Germany and she hoped to make a difference. I think WWII had an extraordinary number of brave women and Mildred was definitely one of them.
