Reaction to FDR death.

Bert’s reaction to the news of FDR’s death was quite different from that of Lucy and others around the radio that night. Why do you think that is?

RE: Reaction to FDR death.

I raise this question because of the conversation between Bert and Lucy after the radio broadcast talking about Roosevelt’s death. Lucy comments about it being a sad day whereas Bert expresses “I don’t get it. The whole dead president thing and everybody being sad over a man they never set eyes on.” My assumption is that Bert’s comment about the president being “too far away” (from the mountains) to cry over speaks more to the president not having any impact on the day to day life and hardships of the remoter mountain areas than it does to physical distance. When daily survival is a challenge, the loftier national priorities likely are not relevant, making the president less relevant.

I agree with what you have presented. I also believe that the world at the tobacco farm might have more “worldly” in that they were aware of prisoners from Germany in town and men going to serve. Though not mentioned, I wonder if a tobacco farmer would be more aware of politics due policies that might affect his/her livelihood
