In chapter 8, Dr. Gawande describes the choices made by his daughter's piano teacher, Peg Bachelder. Her definition of a good day meant returning to teaching and culminated in two concerts performed by her students. If you were facing similar circumstances, what would your good day look like?

A good day for me would include having family around, a good meal, a walk outside.

Peg's good day was being with her "children"- her student and music. Her last days were enhanced by them
For me a good day would be to be out in the sunshine and able to enjoy a good meal.

My good day for me, if death were imminent, would to be able to still interact with family and friends. It would be to have a lucid mind and have pain under control.

My good day would be filled with music, family, memories, good food and books. If I was able to be outside, it would include a few hours on a Puget Sound ferry, walking in Lincoln Park, and feeling the wind on my face.

My good day would be interacting with family and friends. And,if possible, having a hot fudge sundae.

As free of pain as possible, spending a day on my lanai in picture perfect weather, listening to classical music and reading and enjoying nature with a friend of two stopping by.

In my good day, I would be with extended family, if possible, but definitely with my children and their families. I would read (or be read to), listen to my favorite music (preferably played by my son and daughter-in-law, who are professionals), and play bridge if possible. I doubt I would be able to have one of my two favorite foods (popcorn!), so I’d settle for the best possible ice cream available (my favorite right now is Three Twins - try it, if you can find it.

A good book to read, being able to spend time with my children and grandchildren, and some fresh air and sunshine.

As with many of the above, my good day would revolve around family. Hopefully any pain would have been alleviated. I hope I would have come to terms with death and be at peace with it.
