RE: Wes’ strengths and weaknesses ---- his humanity and why we like him so much

Wes is such a 'real' character. There are no trite or false actions/feelings. He is a man suffering loss in a man's way. He doesn't know how he will 'fix' things with his son - he just knows he must. An honest man in a very unhappy emotional place. But, he is strong, he does persevere. In his perseverance we learn much from his strength and much about the people he interacts with.

RE: Wes’ strengths and weaknesses ---- his humanity and why we like him so much

The author spends many words describing the events in Wes' life that molded his character. The physical setting for these events whether the prison, the hospital or the canyon, she paints word pictures that come alive when the characters interact within them. Wes has visceral reactions to the places he visits that help to define his character. His physical presence is in tension with his emotional vulnerability that reflects a very masculine stereotype, but the deep and spiritual relationship with his wife and his violin add a 4th dimension to him that I related to very strongly.
