Have you ever misjudged or underestimated someone the way that Anastasia misjudged Genie? If so, how did finding out the truth change your understanding of the relationship you had with that person?

Anastasia and Genie were my two least favorite characters, I suspected that a woman of Genie’s years and experiences would have seen through Anastasia.

No, I haven’t. (Edit: actually, I have, but not to this extent!). But Anastasia’s complete self-centric approach to her life caused her to misjudge Genie. The two women were my least favorite characters also, and I believe I would’ve enjoyed the book a lot more with less focus on them.

I haven’t misjudged or underestimated someone to the degree Anastasia misjudged Genie. I didn’t find these two characters particularly appealing.

I have never misjudged or underestimated anyone the way that Anastasia misjudged Genie. I enjoyed their parts in the book, though. It showed that when you think that you are taking advantage of someone, that same person could very well be taking advantage of you too!

Have I ever been taken advantage of by someone before? Absolutely! Sometimes I even knew I was being taken advantage of and kept my mouth shut. And I have certainly manipulated others at times to get my way or something I wanted. But to THIS extreme, no way. The interesting part is that Anastasia knew she couldn't say anything to Genie because she was not honest to begin with. It was the price she had to pay. Two players, playing each other.

I didn't hate these sections of the book, but they made me feel very uncomfortable. Genie's behavior was a physical violation of Anastasia, in addition to a head game. It was incredible to me that Anastasia continued to stay- -or in a larger sense what people will stay involved with in order to have more, more, more of SOME thing they think they need or want. Anastasia had multiple opportunities to just walk away. She didn't! What about her made her stay in this situation? Her brother plotted a robbery in about a month. I was fascinated that that did not occur to Anastasia.

I'm sure we've all misjudged others in our lives, but never to the extent that these two tried to take advantage of each other. Genie was using her wealth and power to be abusive to Anastasia. Anastasia was using her youth and beauty to gain a position. Neither were pleasant people.

I think we’ve all misjudged people, but these two women were an extreme case of presenting one self to the world while keeping another self hidden away. They weren’t particularly likable characters but they were fascinating to read about - as nasty characters often are

I think we have all misjudged people, but as the others commented, not to this extreme. I still have my childhood friend. We were friends from the time we were 4 years old. While in therapy a few years ago I realized throughout our children she had been a bully to me. The term was not around 70 years ago.
