Do you consider October to be the epitome of a young, accomplished, independent woman and artist? What do you think of her character, her personality, work habits and motivations. How did she end up in the love triangle between Joe and Cal?

I found October to be a bit of a puzzle, which made her realistic. She was amazingly strong and tough in some circumstances, but wavering and uncertain in others. She certainly seems to know herself better than most.

Yes, she seems portrayed as a young, successful artist. I think that her feelings for Joe developed slowly as he began to share his personal interests with her - especially his connection with nature. She was "comfortable" in the relationship with Cal but didn't seem to be as emotionally involved with him as she was sexually. She did not realize who Cal really was, nor that there was any relationship between the two men. Accomplished artists generally see the world through a different lens than most do, they are more attached to the beauty of nature. Joe shared his love of nature and that became a significant bond between them.

October was an innocent player in the love triangle.

I thought she was someone who really knew her own mind, and as an artist put her soul on display for others. If Joe and Cal hadn't had a history, there really wouldn't have been much of a love triangle. She would have fessed-up to Cal and that would have been that.

I thought October was the key character in the book that wove the story together. Her concept of art was amazing and it was through her art that the story unfolded. That being said, I do not consider her the epitome of a young, accomplished, independent women and artist. I see her as the epitome of an artist who took her art and made it part of who she was. Early in the book she referred to herself as "an Artist of Life" And Joe's response: "I like the idea that a person can go about their daily life and be an artist simply by being." sums up how I looked at October throughout the book.

I found the character of October to be a very vulnerable one. Despite her success she seems to live a very simple life, happy with her dog and cooking and creating. Being a part of the love triangle was very stressful for her. Once she started being with Joe, she distanced herself from Cal. I think she very honest as an artist and as a person.

I thought October was a bit too good to be true. She was just too perfect, which made it hard to see how she wound up in this love triangle when she realized who Cal was to Joe.

I think October is sort of a 'hippie'. I did not care for her living art projects. I thought they were very strange and I can't imagine people standing for hours to see her show and going back to see it over and over. However, her shows were definitely strange! She is, however, young and successful in what she is doing. I really don't think of her as a very strong person. She followed Cal around when he started traveling and she was not at all faithful to him or honest with him. She just seemed to act on her emotions.

I loved October. I could vividly picture her in my mind's eye. Her personality resonated with me, and she was certainly portrayed as a young successful artist. If she were real, I would see her work! I believe she was vulnerable, genuine and was able to tap into her true feelings (and others). She ended up in the love triangle because Cal was never around. Had Cal not seen Joe's toes that night, I think October would've ended the relationship with him (with or without Joe's help).

I'm not a big performance art fan, but I would go see something like October's projects. I enjoyed the descriptions and, while I doubt I would see everything it was supposed to represent without someone like the author cluing me in, it was interesting to see the connection between October and her projects. As with nature, I liked how Debartolo used those projects to develop October's (and Joe's) character. She was refreshingly real, vulnerable, and independent all at once.
