Discuss Joe's obsession with trees and, in particular, redwoods. What role have the trees played in his life? Have you ever experienced nature in the way that Joe does? That is, nature as family, friend, or at least something so comforting and familiar, it strikes you with a sense of awe?

I loved that the best of the relationship that Joe had with his father related to trees. The trees were a symbol of the constant that Joe was not able to get from his dad, or his brother. I love being both in the woods or at the shore feeling more of a part of the world.

I think Joe's obsession with trees was nostalgia of family time, perhaps a time when he felt whole. I love mountains!

Joe had a bond with his deceased brother, Sam, through the trees. They were an importance "permanence" in his childhood. Also, some of his only happy times with his father were when his father told him about the trees and nature as a child. Loving the trees provided something stable in Joe's life. I loved that it ended with Joe asking October to go see a tree!

If you have been fortunate to have visited the redwoods, you would be in harmony with Joe on his love of the trees. It is completely understandable to know them by name, love them both as individual

trees and as a forest.

I thought this started with the hikes with his dad and brother and seems like nature was the only place where he and his dad could relate to each other. Also it was a memory that he could hold onto of his brother. It is true that the redwoods are captivating.

Trees, especially these giant redwoods, have a sense of permanence the Joe strives for. He seems to be in awe of their ability to just be. The woods and trees seem to remind him of his happiest memories.
