There are many big things in the book: a big dog, big trees, a big birdcage, big love, big friendship, and big art concepts. Do you think the author is trying to show or tell us something here?

There are many big things in the book: a big dog, big trees, a big birdcage, big love, big friendship, and big art concepts. Let's add that Cal is also larger than life. Though both Joe and October are described as being physically small. Do you think the author is trying to show or tell us something here?

Interesting, I didn't notice this while reading the book, but it's true. Maybe the author is trying to give us a "glass half full" thought provoking experience while reading the book.

I think Joe was a bit tentative and had to be pushed to feel confident about things. Big things were easy for him to associate with because they were bigger than him and he could look up to them.

I had not noticed that. I think it is because the book is written from Joe's perspective and the things that were important to him, He envisioned as "big".

Maybe the author’s concept for this book was big and expansive and these big things in the book are symbolic of that. Just a guess.

I really hadn't noticed until you pointed it out, how many "big" things there are in the book. I wonder if the author is making some point about how we can be so focused on "big" things that we miss/overlook the "little" things that are so much a part of everyday reality. Is she asking us to be more mindful?

This is a very interesting question. I failed to connect the dots, if the author was trying to show me something or make a particular point. I read her answer to this question in the “ask the author section”. Her response was very thoughtful, thorough, and informative!
