After the birdcage performance, Joe says: "Art isn't about people who are better than us showing us how much better they are, it's about being reminded of the ways in which we are all the same." This is a powerful realization for the narrator, and, hopefully, for the reader. Does it ring true for you?

We are all drawn to some type of art and may see or hear it from different perspectives, but it opens the door for a relationship between the art and the audience. Universally, it can provide calm, joy, viewing or listening pleasure, demands nothing but the opportunity to stir appreciation and/or comment from the viewer. Art is a universal tool of communication, essential to all, a win-win generated out of a passion for one's own gratification as well as others, the identification and use of a gift, and the opportunity to experience gratitude.

I agree with lorrained - art is universal, even though sometimes we find a particular piece difficult to understand.

Nope. I personally did not think that October practiced art.

I loved this statement, it is a perfect way to understand what art means in a single sentence. It was one of the best things in the book.
