Were the feelings between Constance and Sheriff Heath the same?

It seems we all recognize that there are feelings between these two. Yet, I think they were coming from different places initially. I think Constance was romantically attracted to him, as well as professionally, until she became aware of his marital status. On the other hand, I don't thing Sheriff Heath had the same reaction to Constance. I think he is too moral and upright to have been romantically attracted or sexually ( can we say that for the time? ) to her. I'm sure the differences between the two women were not lost on him and he probably found Constance's independence and gutsiness equally attractive and slightly unbecoming but he definitely liked her intelligence and perserverance. What we all say we want men to acknowledge in us--lol

RE: Were the feelings between Constance and Sheriff Heath the same?

I think that Sheriff Heath surprised Constance romantically. She "suddenly" met her equal, and possibly a person with whom she felt a lasting bond. Her perspective on the male sex was not positive based on her life experiences. However, his marriage was an unbreachable wall; neither of them would think of compromising the situation by voicing their own personal feelings. Although Constance was such an independent woman for her time, she was still encompassed in many ways by the moral and social expectations of the time. It would be unthinkable for either of them to act on impulse.

Hoping for Sheriff Heath's wife to tire of his never being home and leave him. Constance is a much better match.

I agree with Nancy, Constance would be a much better match for the Sheriff, but I doubt it would happen.

At first I wasn't sure that Sheriff Heath was an honest man out to help the Kopp sisters. As he proved himself worthy, I could see Constance sort of falling for him. I feel Sheriff Heath definitely was into Constance and infatuated with her because she was such a strong woman and worthy partner.

I think they were in the beginnings of an attraction to each other, but agree with the others who have posted that they will probably not act on their feelings. But it's definitely an eye opener for both of them to find an equal in the opposite sex. I'm anxious to see what the future holds for these two .....

I agree with other posting's that Constance and Sheriff Heath were attracted to each other but would not act on those feeling due to his being married.

RE: Were the feelings between Constance and Sheriff Heath the same?

As the narrator of the story, we only know what Constance tells us, and Constance is not given to sentimental digression regarding her own feelings or speculative descriptions of the feelings of others. She makes us work for our information and forces us to read between the lines to form our own opinions. For example, when she tells us about the Singer man depositing her at Mrs. Florence's Country Home for Friendless and Erring Women, she does not tell us if she felt abandoned and unloved, whether she wept, pleaded with him or lashed out in anger. She just relates the facts. We have to infer that she did not blame him from the fact that Fleurette's middle name, Eugenie, is for the Singer man's first name, Eugene.

She is almost as secretive about her feelings for the sheriff. But we're too good for her; we put together the little hints given in a casual mention of the warmth of his hand in hers, the look of the sun on his face, his little half smile, and, when she and her sisters are tending to his gunshot wound, that description of the freckles on his shoulder. There's a tenderness in her voice that Constance can't hide from us. Even Fleurette notices what a good time Constance had when she "got to run around with Sheriff Heath."

Knowing what Sheriff Heath feels about Constance is a bit trickier as his thoughts are filtered through her voice. We do know he admires her intelligence from that look he gives her when she comes up with a solution to the problem of Ewing, his amusement when she strong arms Kaufman into submitting his signature for the handwriting analysis, and his praise for her good investigative work in locating Bobby and ascertaining Kaufman's involvement. But admiration is not a romantic feeling.

His actions show that he cares about the welfare of the Kopp sisters as he goes against his superiors and puts in a lot of extra hours to provide protection. But that could be just another example of his integrity as a public servant.

And he does seem to give preferential treatment to Constance, confiding in her the details of the case on their frequent walks, enlisting her help, even entrusting her with a gun and teaching her how to handle it before he does the same with her sisters. Add to that the fact that we never see any tenderness between the sheriff and Mrs. Heath and . But the sheriff remains ever the married man and when he offers Constance a job as his assistant, she is still "Miss Kopp"

But who can blame us for seeing what we want to see. After all, even flighty Fleurette assumes that there is a mutual attraction between the sheriff and her sister. When Francis tells her his fear that one of the sisters would shoot Kaufman and land them all in jail, Fleurette responds, "Sheriff Heath would never put Constance in jail. He likes her too much." The hints are all there, but we're a long way from having proof. Guess we'll all just have to wait for the next installment to see if we were right.

RE: Were the feelings between Constance and Sheriff Heath the same?

There's definitely a connection, but it seems to change as the story goes on. The sheriff seemed to be protective at first, but we knew he kept his eye on Constance because she was taking action and seemed to be stronger, the leader of the family. Also, I'm sure he admires her courage and intelligence in the way she carries out her side of the investigation as when she went to the hotel to inspect the rooms. But I don't think they have the same feelings between them. He respects her as "Miss Kopp" and trusts her to learn to handle a gun and see that her sisters also comply. Maybe that's new for him and he likes knowing there are women who can react as she does in her strange situation. He's in charge of the case, and she's in charge of the family situation, so they have that much in common. I guess time will tell if anything more personal evolves, but he also wants to protect Constance's two "sisters". He also has a wife, which was serious thing at that time when divorces weren't common.
I like that he trusts her intelligence and yet also cares what happens to Constance as well as her sisters. It's a good story.

RE: Were the feelings between Constance and Sheriff Heath the same?

There is a connection, but compare Constance to the other women in the story : the staid Norma, the flighty Fleurette, the frazzled but not really met Mrs Heath, it only makes sense there would be some kind of attraction. I was not surprised that he offered her a job, but I don't think that a romantic attachment will realistically follow due to the time frame and the morals of both at the moment, especially considering her former "affair".
