The Execution of Noa P. Singleton

I think the book cover was one of the coolest I have seen in a long time. Wondering what others thought?

I thought the cover was a good one! If I was book browsing in a store I would pick this one up to check out just because of the cover.

I do love analyzing book covers. This one is good, definitely eye-catching and intriguing.

Was her name crossed off because she was executed? The cover made me uncomfortable enough that I placed it back cover up when I put it down--it didn't make sense to me.

I think it is perfect for the subject matter.

Perfect! It would catch my eye in the book store. Just looking at the cover without reading the book, I would think it meant she was not executed. I expected the death penalty to be overturned.

It was plain because of the subject matter and also because of Noah herself. If Noa only had one good virtue it was that she was real. She saw life as it was, there were no fancy packaging around her.

I thought the book cover was well done and fits the subject of the book.

The book cover was perfect....it went with the title extremely well and if in a book store would have got my attention. The red used to cross out Noa name indicted the end of her life in a subtle way.

I thought the book cover was arresting and very referential to its title. The black background was certainly appropriate to the subject matter as was the crossing out of Noa P. Singleton.

Fascinating cover. When I first saw it I thought maybe her name was crossed off because she was not executed. Now I think that perhaps it is a symbol of truth being crossed out. An elimination of her existence.

I did not like it. What I didn't like about it was the way her name was crossed out and A NOVEL was written under it. I like that it was black. I like THE EXECUTION OF NOA P. SINGLETON and even the line through her name is OK but I did not like A NOVEL penciled in. Maybe I don't get it.

I didn't think much about the cover until I read this question. I do think it was appropriate for the book and the subject matter. I think Noa's name being crossed out gave me a clue as to what was going to happen in the end.

At least it didn't have a scantily clad man on the cover as so many novels do of late.

I thought the cover was depressing, like the book. It's appropriate to the story.

I think it is dark, like the subject matter. Executing someone is a lot like trying to erase them by crossing them out. They won't continue doing anything in the story, but their presence is still there.

I also hadn't thought too much about it before, but I think it's a good representation of the book. Despite that, it's not a cover that particularly asks you to pick it up.

I liked the cover and would definitely be attracted to it if I were browsing in a store or library.

RE: What did you think of the book cover?

My first look at the book cover gave me a chill. I’m not fond of the horror or thriller genre and the juxtaposition of two subjects in the title: the name of an individual, personalized with middle initial, against the finality of the word “Execution,” combined with the blood-red line through the woman’s name convinced me that this was not going to be a feel-good, beach read. I set it aside and did not include it in my vacation packing.

When I did pick up the novel three weeks later, I found myself, like EileenP, frequently averting my eyes from the unpleasant cover. However, as I was drawn deeper into Silver’s complex story, I realize that the harsh image was multilayered too. In one sense, it does refer to Noa’s legal sentence, but it also suggests much of her life. An absent father, a neglectful and self-absorbed mother, unintended accidents that have terrible consequences, a series of mistakes and bad choices, a failed justice system, and ten years “living” on death row combine to carry out that sentence long before “X Day.”

When I finished the book, I immediately ordered a hard cover copy which now sits in my bookcase among happier titles because The Execution of Noa P. Singleton is as important as State of Wonder and The History of Love. And yes, I like the cover and I loved the book!
