What information do the three houses that Agnes inhabits tell her about what will happen there? Do you feel the energetics of the spaces, and the people who live there with her, become characters in and of themselves?

Agnes is very sensitive to her environment, including when she moves between different homes. What information do the three houses, indoor and outdoor, that she inhabits tell her about what will happen there?

Do you feel the energetics of the spaces, and the people who live there with her, become characters in and of themselves? In what ways?

RE: What information do the three houses...

Agnes grows up in a farmhouse at the edge of the forest. The community views the forest as dangerous; but Agnes's mother teaches her to be comfortable in the forest, and Agnes comes to love the outdoors. When her mother dies, unloving stepmother Joan treats Agnes as second-tier; and Agnes, remembering her late mother's unconditional love, vows to escape.
After marriage, Agnes lives with her husband in a small home built onto his family's larger house, which also includes her father-in-law's glove-making workshop. The house is dominated by her new in-laws: the smell of spoiled wool hangs in their new house, proof of her cruel father-in-law's corrupt business dealings. Agnes wisely realizes her husband cannot be happy in this home, and engineers a way for him to escape even though it means he will live apart from her.
After her husband attains success in London, he buys a large home for Agnes and their daughters. It is clear he will continue to spend most of his time away from them; but Agnes agrees to move to the new home. She spends most of her time outdoors in the large garden space where she plants trees and grows bees.

RE: What information do the three houses...

Marilyn, you are right on! Agnes' initial home was her favorite. It's where her skills and values were honed. She never felt comfortable in the in-law's house--it was too restrictive not only because of the assertive in-laws but also because of its location and structural shape. There is a whole page describing how Agnes felt about the shape of that apartment. And, the new house while big and lovely was restrictive in its elaborateness. Agnes didn't really know what to do with the space, except for the brewhouse. Even though Agnes didn't live there, I think the austereness of her husband's London apartment helped her understand him a little.

Normally, I would say that the people who live in a house determine how you feel about the house itself - if you are happy there, then you would probably love the house. But in Agnes’ case, she is such a spiritual creature that she most likely can intuit whether it will be a happy home, whether the people who live there are happy or will ever be happy.

RE: What information do the three houses...

Agnes loved her first home. She felt free and was able to use the forest for more freedom. Her third home was close to the first but only because it had gardens which she could lose herself in while she planted. Her second home was not only confining for her but also her husband. This was why Agnes sent her husband to London. Although she did not love living with her in-laws, her husband was very unhappy there.
Because Agnes had certain abilities, her homes were like living creatures. The feel of the house was important to her because it fostered creativity among the humans that lived there. Her in-laws house didn’t give a creative or upbeat feeling for her or her family.
