I think it would be Mary, for her maternal and protective instincts- especially with Jubie. She could see that she was a sensitive child, and she nurtured her, building up her self-esteem. I felt touched by Mary. There was so much prejudice and disrespect that she dealt with, yet she carried on with dignity. She seemed so accepting of how things were. But then, what choice did she have?
Here Mary was in this time and place, being treated terribly by white people that came into her life, yet she took care of this white family. It wasn't just a job to her. She was basically raising the children. She seemed to spend more time with them than the mother and father put together. She definitely was there for them and caring for them with love. I think her spiritual faith helped her to stay focused on the right and be able to withstand the wrong in her life.

I agree with Jeann. I identified the most with Mary, she was really the rock of the family and really the only person who treated Jubie as a beloved child. She was really the best character in the book, she stood for everything that a person should be: dignified, moral, caring and have empathy for others.
