Has there been a time in your own life analogous to the year Kate spends in Lessons in French, when you found yourself in a foreign set of circumstances and had to adapt? Were you influenced artistically or intellectually? Did you come across whole new facets of human nature? How does Kate’s journey resonate with you?

Yes. Right out of college I lived in a different state than my family. Different state, different city, for me it was a very foreign experience since I knew only one person. So his friends/family sort of became my surrogate family and friends. It was an experience quite relatable to Kate's in its own, domestic way.

When I first got married 45 years ago, I moved 600 miles away from my family. Long distance calls were infrequent so we had to rely on letters. I tried to make my husband's family a replacement for my family but finally realized that wasn't the solution. So I made a new local 'family' out of my friends.

When I went away to college it was really the first time I had been away from home for more than a week, and I was 4 hours away without a car. I only got home about every two months so it was a big adjustment for me. There was no internet so I only talked to family once a week and had to learn to make lots of decisions on my own. I was a music major so it was other music majors who became family for me as we were a close group on campus.
