Why does Kate feel like she's living inside a Picasso painting? Do you think Kate's mother's words about handling pressure are fair?

Kate has a lot of trouble establishing her own point of view among the powerfully influential personalities surrounding her in Paris. At one point she says she feels like she is living inside a Picasso painting, assuming multiple perspectives, and lying to everyone. There are several characters who call her on this in various ways: Claudia, Christie, Etienne, and Kate's own mother, who says, “You and I can handle certain pressures. We don’t feel the need to exaggerate or indulge in, quote unquote, stress. We’re survivors. We have perspective. Remember that” (p. 193). Do you think these motherly words are fair at this point?

RE: Why does Kate feel like she's living inside a Picasso painting? Do you think Kate's mother's words about handling pressure are fair?

By the middle of the book Kate is in the midst of lot of people, including herself, who are deceiving each other
and all pulling her into their games and she feels the pressure of all the secrets and her needing to get along with them all and not slip up some how. She is constantly seeing things from conflicting perspectives and her mother's words on pressure come to her but are in reality just another burden since she can not see any way out of it all that isn't a disaster. She fears hurting the various individuals, jeopardizing her job, losing friends, and disappointing her mother.
